Five Betas to Fight Boredom

Phil Butler

The museum of modern betas (MOMB ) is one really cool place to get a "heads up" on upcoming startups and beta tests. I gathered a short list of new startups that might just add some fun and/or utility to your day. We review so many sites that are fantastic innovations and some that have the ability to change the way we think about Web 2.0, but there are plenty that are just plain fun and that are not designed [...]

UnLtd World - Social Entrepreneur Network?

Phil Butler

UnLtd World is a new beta that I was invited to test today. This charity based social network has a vision to be a platform for social entrepreneurs and a base for socially minded people to interact. My first impression of the site (outside the slick design) was skeptical I must say. My vision of the next social network, if we ever need another, has been something possessing unprecedented flexibility and function. While UnLtd does not possess Web [...]

Roll A Name - Networking Wannabe

Phil Butler

Roll A Name is a new social networking site currently in beta testing. The idea is that users can benefit by gaining visibility and using “shameless” self promotion. As with any other run-of-the-mill networking site, Roll A Name members can create profiles, add friends, set preferences and so on. According to the site, users can also promote anything that interests them from favorite movies to websites. My question is: “Is there room for one more marginal social networking site on [...]

Yahoo! Mash Unmasked

Allan Herman

I was very intrigued by an article by Paul Glazowski on how Yahoo had unveiled Mash. In his initial remarks Paul stated,” Yahoo! wants to change..” “…it's launched Mash, a site that promises, not unlike all other creations…” As Paul continues, “…right now you’re probably wondering what, if anything, makes Mash special…” Ever being the curious type I read on, Paul really had my interest peaked going by this time as he is prone to do when I read any [...]

Animoto – Dynamic Video from Images

Phil Butler

I tested a cool new beta application called Animoto yesterday that could very well be the end of slideshows as we know them. I always wanted to create something artistic with my images and Animato has provided an easy tool for rendering striking video montages. Users can upload images from their PC or popular hosting sites and select audio from disc or stock offerings. Everything on the Web should be this easy and unique.
Animoto was built with Ruby on [...]

On A Windows Safari With Apple

Phil Butler

On Monday Apple made its Safari Web browser available for Windows based PC's. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple made the announcement at the company's World Wide Developers Conference opening up yet another venue for competition with rival Microsoft. Wall Street was not overly impressed at the news and Apple shares dropped by $4.30 after the news. The new Beta version of Safari is available at Apple's home site. Even though Wall Street does not seem to be impressed according to [...]

Hakia - Search for Better Search

Phil Butler

Hakia recently initiated “The Search for Better Search” initiative via a focused poll taken from some of Web 2.0's best technical blogs. The results reveal an overwhelming and compelling need for a better search capability. Make no mistake about it; raising the bar for the people at hakia has nothing to do with hype or beating Google really, but about the art of transcendence. The vision there is about elevating the world's expectations and thinking so that search and the Web can transcend [...]

Uvouch Updates and a Wii Contest

Phil Butler

Uvouch, one of the Web's most unique video sharing sites is starting a contest today, and launching several unique user features as well. Contestants stand a chance to win a Nintendo Wii Sports console and other cool prizes. Uvouch has also added even more functionality since our last visit with customization and embedding tools not found on even the most advanced video sharing communities. The Wii contest is a welcome incentive to attract even more feedback from users and in rewarding users [...]

Jabbits Beta Answers and Questions

Phil Butler

Jabbits.com is an interactive Q & A startup site similar to Yahoo! Answers with a video twist. The site is aimed at the video and community based search engine segments of Web 2.0. Essentially, Jabbits is a consumer research tool that allows users to upload video questions from web-cams, mobile phones or camcorders that will provoke video answers. The idea is quite intriguing, but its functionality is dependent on the site's popularity and diversity. The market for this type of educational tool [...]
