AOL News Gets Revamp, Readers Sigh Relief

Paul Glazowski

I’ll be honest. Apart from the odd link on Digg, I never visit AOL. I’m sure it’s a descent place to visit as far as Web portals go. I doubt it offers any worse an experience than Yahoo! or MSN, anyhow. Today, I ventured there once again. A Reuters piece published on ZDNet highlighted some changes at AOL News, and so I went. No particular story to read there. Just paid a visit. And, you know, it wasn’t so bad.
It [...]

Automated Audio Blogging To Simplify News Consumption?

Svetlana Gladkova

It looks like automated audio blogging is growing increasingly popular these days. We reviewed Odiogo back in January, recently we have also talked about Talkr and when browsing podcasting apps on Simple Spark, the Web 2.0 categorized catalogue I was so impressed with on Thursday I have found another similar application named BlueGrind. This product has not been reviewed on Profy but anyway it is really a very new service (it only has a handful of already registered feeds and [...]

The New Ask.com: More Skin, More Features, And Simpler Still

Paul Glazowski

Ask.com. There’s a lot of love for the fourth-most-popular search engine on the Net. It’s an industry player that’s okay with not having to fight for the top spot. (Though it certainly would take it if the crown were offered.) It caters to loyalists and is content in knowing it offers more bang for the buck than just about any portal in existence today. Of course, it’d enhance it’s allure even further if I’d take Jeeves out of retirement to [...]

Web 2.0-Friendly Engine Technorati Gets Revamp

Paul Glazowski

Spring is the season of rebirth and revival, which many companies with homes on the Internet have taken to heart. One such website, which just a day or two ago reemerged onto the scene with a fresh coat of paint, is Technorati, a well kept index of blogs, videos, and music. And I must say, the new incarnation is far more attractive.
There’s nothing miraculous about Technorati. The site tracks what’s new and what’s popular in Web 2.0, and sorts it [...]

BackwardBlog: ‘Contact Us’ Form Pretending To Be A Blog

Svetlana Gladkova

Rather long time ago we used to visit numerous websites only to get some information. Later we had forums for discussions and special guest book sections to leave feedback to a particular site's owner. Now it is absolutely normal that we rarely visit website just to read something useful. To be more precise, when we find something actually useful we tend to contribute: post our comments, submit to Digg, Netscape or StumbleUpon, bookmark in Del.icio.us for further reading and share [...]

Pentagon Blocked Access to Entertainment Sites

Svetlana Gladkova

It looks like Pentagon further restricts the way military personnel uses the world wide web. Military personnel and civilian employees will not be able to access YouTube, MySpace, Pandora, Photobucket, hi5, metacafe and several other “recreational Internet sites” (I like the term, by the way) when they are using the Department of Defense network. The full list of websites along with the explanation of the reasons for such a decision can be found in the official Pentagon memo. The cited [...]

Citizen Journalism: Web 2.0 Content Creators Get Taken Seriously

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

It started with Wikis, and moved on to news agencies signing up for services like Blogburstto add additional content to their sites. Now, newspapers are noticing the value of bloggers, and a new breed of citizen journalists is gaining prominence.
PaidContent notes that the new commuter daily BostonNow, is using news items that readers submit via their web site. Obviously, the first question is going to be how these content providers are compensated, but BostonNow has at least started out by [...]

11th Annual Webby Awards Winners Announced

Paul Glazowski

The Webby Award winners for 2007 have been announced, and though the variety of categories doesn’t allow Web 2.0-centric entries to claim a majority, some well-known names – quite a few mentioned here on Profy in the past, in fact - are present on the roster to be celebrated come June 5th at a gala held in New York City for all winners. Here are a few of this year’s number-ones.
Remember Zopa? Diana Tan covered the “money marketplace” here on [...]

Zaadz - Socially Conscious Networking

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

When poking around MyBlogLog one day, I came across a social networking site that's been around since late 2005, yet seems to be generating some new buzz: Zaadz.
Zaadz is a comprehensive community site with over 48,000 members that's named the Dutch word for seed. Trying to boil down the driving force behind the site into a few sentences is nearly impossible; the front page text is nearly a page in itself. Here's what I do know: Zaadz is a modern [...]
