Weighing Business Against Friendship: Exactly Why Is Facebook Valuated That Much Higher Than LinkedIn?

Svetlana Gladkova,

Eric Eldon over at VentureBeat has two interesting posts today about both Facebook and LinkedIn allowing their employees to sell up to 20% of their stock options in each of the respective company. Eric has a great and insightful analysis of both companies and how these decisions could work out but to me the most interesting part in both stories is that if Eric's sources are correct, Facebook's internal valuation is now at $4 billion while that [...]

Microsoft’s Own Social Network Under Development

Triston McIntyre,

As an avid Apple afficianado and advocate of all things open source, my stance on Microsoft is usually clear-cut: I don't care for it.  Everything about Microsoft's business practices rubs me wrong.  With that said, I was surprised to learn that Microsoft has been toying with its own little pet social network since the beginning of the year.
After all, Microsoft invested hundreds of millions in Facebook just last year, and all the talk of a large-scale Yahoo! and Facebook [...]

First Business App for Facebook Further Alienates College Crowd

Triston McIntyre,

As I am just escaping the undergraduate college community, I tend to consider myself something of a Facebook expert. That isn't to say I consider myself an industry analyst or anything like that; as Facebook is as necessary an element of each college student's life as the infamous Cup-O-Noodles, I would probably best label my relationship to Facebook currently "Recovering Facebook Expert."
That being said, I'm intrigued to some degree or another by the direction Facebook applications [...]

Forbes Publishes 2nd Annual ‘Web Celeb 25′

Paul Glazowski,

Forbes published Tuesday evening its second annual Web Celeb 25 list highlighting the most influential – both positively and negatively, we suspect – names known throughout the digital ether that have had the most impact on the 2007 zeitgeist of buzztastic junk.
Now, before we go any further and share some feelings about the picks as chosen by the business magazine, we feel it imperative to start with a question, short and simple: Why the cold shoulder? Why no Profy [...]

Game - Set - Matchpoint

Phil Butler,

I got the opportunity to speak with Peter Adams -CEO of Matchpoint on Thursday of last week. Matchpoint is a fairly revolutionary startup aimed at improving both ends of the Internet advertising spectrum. Matchpoint allows consumers to search for businesses that are radically more relevant to their needs. With some modification, this type of search/suggestion innovation could very well rival Adsense and especially banner ads for certain businesses. Essentially, Matchpoint provides a win-win solution for advertisers and customers.

Taking A Look At Yahoo! Kickstart

Paul Glazowski,

If you’ve been following Yahoo! developments as of late - including the company’s bout with a US Congressional panel earlier this week concerning its collaboration with Chinese authorities in nabbing reporter/dissident Shi Tao, who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment as a result – you might have been surprised about its announcement Tuesday of a preview release of a new college-student-and-alumni-specific professional networking website, dubbed Yahoo! Kickstart.
I myself am puzzled about the debut, particularly as it means Yahoo! [...]

IPOs In The Social Networking World: LinkedIn Is ‘Likely’

Paul Glazowski,

The latest issue of Newsweek features an interview by Steven Levy with LinkedIn CEO Dan Nye . Apart from being a standard Q&A, filled with talk about the meaning and status of the company, it shed some light on a question many have asked the heads of various online social networking institutions in weeks past. The question being: Sale or IPO?
If you wish to know Nye’s answer to the question (which came thanks Levy’s persistence on the subject), it’s [...]

Microsoft Launches Free Directory Service With Live Search 411

Michael Garrett,

Microsoft appears to be taking a cue from Google by unveiling its very own free directory service called Live Search 411.
Back in March, the software giant acquired TellMe Networks, which had already been offering a directory service. In fact the TellMe service appears to still be active and separate from the new Microsoft offering, with a different number for each (The number remains 1-800-555-TELL for TellMe).
By dialing 1-800-Call-411, anyone can use Live Search 411 to find and reach [...]

SuperPages.com Launches Video Advertising For Businesses

Michael Garrett,

Recently, online yellow page directory SuperPages has been conducting a trial run of embedded videos in business listings in a group of test markets, in order to help both businesses and consumers.
Today, Idearc Media has announced a successful trial and the national launch of SuperPages Video, which has been developed to allow "small-to-medium-sized businesses to communicate the uniqueness of their products, services or business environments."
Businesses who opt to use this new advertising service will have either the option [...]

Now Public, Citizen Journalism Venture, Strives For The Top

Paul Glazowski,

When you hear the term citizen journalism, does it ring any bells? It should. It’s been floated about quite a bit over the years. It refers to a sort of “massively multiplayer” method of producing news stories and features, produced “by the people, for the people.”
Many news organizations from around the world latched onto the concept in various ways as Web 2.0-type tools started to look ever more appealing to those esteemed institutions. Yahoo! even made its own attempts [...]
