Zaadz - Socially Conscious Networking

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

When poking around MyBlogLog one day, I came across a social networking site that's been around since late 2005, yet seems to be generating some new buzz: Zaadz.
Zaadz is a comprehensive community site with over 48,000 members that's named the Dutch word for seed. Trying to boil down the driving force behind the site into a few sentences is nearly impossible; the front page text is nearly a page in itself. Here's what I do know: Zaadz is a modern [...]

Feds Hit Second Life Casinos

Phil Butler

G-men descended on Second Life's gambling casinos at the request of the virtual world's creator Linden Lab. The FBI has not made a determination about the legality of the site's virtual gambling and the agents probably felt pretty naked without their guns and badges too. Second Life has requested review of this issue several times in an effort to head off any issues that may cause problems. Until now FBI officials have been reluctant to take a look around (probably [...]

FluidPlay: Streaming Tunes Through Your Browser

Paul Glazowski

Your music, anywhere and everywhere. That’s supposed to be what we all want. At home. At school. At work. In the air. Underground. Underwater. You name it, we want it. Or do we? Heck, I don’t know. But in case you do want your music wherever you go – or at least at the multiple PCs you encounter in your daily routine – here’s a product that you might want to check out.
It’s called FluidPlay, and it’s currently in “alpha,” [...]

JobTonic.com Pays Out

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

JobTonic.com, a company we profiled a little over a week ago, is rewarding its first referral with a £375 finder's fee. The site, which launched in 2006, allows users to refer friends, acquaintances, and themselves for open positions, replacing a traditional headhunter or employment service with real-life social networks.
In this case, a Mr. B (JobTonic.com has hidden identities) referred Mr. A in Glasgow for a position as Telesales Advisor at a major UK financial company. After the candidate [...]

Code, Conduct - Words to Live By

Phil Butler

The biggest news of the last few days had been the upheaval caused by the deplorable comments and threats leveled at Kathy Sierra. I expect most of us have commented or at least heard about the events and our Cyndy Aleo-Carreira  wrote a very nice piece on the subject the other day. Everyone is upset for the lady technical blogger, but there seems to be a great gulf of opinion as to what the blogosphere should do about this kind of [...]

AutismTown - Building a Community of Advertisers?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

When I first read the press release for the creation of AutismTown, I was thrilled. While there have been some niche community sites created, none of them have been very high profile, nor have they been created by the organizations already providing support to those niche communities.
AutismTown is a joint creation of Autism Speaks, Cure Autism Now, and TalkAutism. Autism Speaks and Cure Autism Now have just announced a merger, and the combined organization provides grants for autism research and [...]

JobTonic.com - Community Headhunting

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The D.I.Y. trend of Web 2.0 extends itself into the employment world with the launch 21 March of JobTonic.com, a headhunting site where companies post jobs and you can refer yourself or your friend for a job, getting the referral bonus for yourself.
With referral bonuses reaching up to £1000, the hope is that employers can find candidates for open positions faster using word of mouth, as well as saving the cost of an agency, which often charges up to 30% [...]

Is Web 2.0 Just Numbers?

Phil Butler

Bebo outranked Google, but does the fate of Web 2.0 hinge on numbers?
Web 2.0 is such an interesting subject for discussion and investigation. Lately I have been a little focused on some credibility issues we should all consider in evaluating sites, startups and other elements of our communal experience.
One big problem I have is the term "unique registered users", because it implies that a site has say 300,000 dedicated regular people who go there. Sites often try to validate [...]

Agester Warning - Content Not Consumable

Phil Butler

I have had the great pleasure to visit some of the most innovative web sites, test the most sought after Beta releases and talk with a few of the most influential personalities of Web 2.0. I feel fortunate sincerely.
Then there is always the other side of the coin, or the one we often do not burden our readers with. That would be the sites and personalities not worth wasting the micro-voltage output of a CPU to visit.
I found [...]

MegaBuzz and Sodahead.com: Social Polling for the Masses

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Ever wonder if anyone else is thinking what you're thinking? Wonder no more with two recent launches that bring polling and community together.
MegaBuzz, which beta launched 20 March, creates a game framework around its polls to create more buzz. Users can create their own polls or picks, gaining points for others taking polls or making choices in your picks, with any buzz item created that gets 500 or more players earning an automatic prize. Other ways to win prizes are [...]
