The Problem Afflicting The Social Music Sphere

Paul Glazowski

When it comes to the social side of Web 2.0 – you know, the MySpaces, the Facebooks – I’m lost. I do very well understand why such places exist, I simply cannot for the life of me grasp why they’ve become so popular, and, furthermore, managed to remain so. Baffling, really. When I consider all the time misspent maintaining relations with “friends” lists, most of whose contacts hold no real allegiance to one another anyhow, I wonder how such holes [...]

DailyMotion Secures First Licensing Deal

Paul Glazowski

Back before YouTube was taken off the market for $1.65bn by Larry, Sergey & Co, a video host with a slightly more infamous existence – it was and still may be the place to go for full-length copyrighted content (television, movies, etc.) that didn’t require knowledge of BitTorrent and such – was making lots and lots of noise of its own. Its name: DailyMotion. If you haven’t heard of it ‘til this moment, you’re either an impeccable citizen or [...]

Google Plans YouTube Antipiracy Tool By September

Michael Garrett

Ever since Google purchased YouTube last November, critics have been wondering what the search giant will do to reduce and control piracy on YouTube. Google is now knee-deep in litigation concerning this very issue. In March, Google was sued by Viacom, who is alleging copyright infringement on YouTube. Viacom is seeking a hefty $1 billion in damages.
Some good news has been slipped by Google, suggesting that, soon, Google plans on eliminating the possibility of piracy and therefore future lawsuits. During [...]

YouTube - Caving or Posturing?

Phil Butler

In the news yesterday YouTube announced they plan to test new fingerprinting technology that will address the copyright issues that are causing them huge legal woes. This new software will identify unique attributes in video clips that may allow for the prevention of uploading copyrighted clips without permission.
YouTube executive Chris Macy told Reuters that the tool would be tested in about a month according to a story via the BBC. Breach of copyright has been a thorn in Google's and [...]

Even The King Is Suing YouTube!

Phil Butler

Now YouTube Has Stepped on the King's Blue Suede Shoes Evidently!
Just last month we posted an article about yet another lawsuit against YouTube and Google initiated by the English Premier Soccer League. YouTube's legal woes are no great secret but the import of this "class action" suit appears to be gaining momentum as France's Tennis Federation, a French soccer league and Cherry Lane Music Publishing Co. have either join or intend to join the suit. This class action suit combined with the [...]

YouTube, EMI Make Nice

Paul Glazowski

We’ve sure you’ve seen the signs. Search for a music video by name or artists on YouTube; find what you’re looking for in the results. Click. Only then you discovered on the following page a red box mentioning something or other about copyright infringement, and that the clip was no longer available for playback. Bummer.
Up to now, that’s been the case when it came to EMI-specific content. (Warner, Universal, and Sony all signed deals with YouTube permitting uploads and [...]

The Rights of Contributrs: 2.0 and “Free Speech”

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

My husband, an avid Flickr user, forwarded me the Community Uprising du Jour, this time regarding "censorship" on Flickr. The community is in an uproar over the deletion of a photo and accompanying comments that were provoked by the alleged theft of an image from a Flickr user.
I'm always a defender of copyrighted content. After all, I'm a writer, and if you think it doesn't bother me to see my articles on splogs and points I make lifted by other [...]

Is YouTube Down the Tubes?

Phil Butler

What is the problem? YouTube and Google just allow people to share content right? Well, someone else does not like their content being shared as more news arrives of yet another lawsuit against the dynamic duo of Google and YouTube. Plaintiffs including the English Premier Soccer League are suing over copyright infringement allegations.
News from Reuters/Yahoo just revealed the filings in the U.S. District Court in New York by the Football Association Premier League Ltd. and music publisher Bourne Co. According [...]

Soapbox Temporarily Closed

Paul Glazowski

I said a word or two about Soapbox when it went live (publicly) a little over a month ago. And it was kind of good. Not the best of the video hosts. But good. Then a rant about EULAs by John Foster on This Week In Media caught my ear some twelve days after Soapbox’s official launch and had me rethink my feelings about site. My new take had nothing to do with the façade Microsoft laid over the content database, but [...]

Copy Left And Right

Niall Kennedy has a post on a copyright violation by Microsoft on his blog; essentially, he took a photograph at a public event, posted it on Flickr under a Creative Commons by-attribution non commercial license, and a Microsoft employee used it in his blog, hotlinking to the Flickr image. Niall felt that the usage violated the terms of the license, and took action.
End of story? Not really. As Niall himself says
I likely kicked off a round of IP discussions on [...]
