Spotplex: An Automated Social News Aggregator Gets Some Updates

Paul Glazowski

Recognize the name Spotplex? If not, no worries. It’s a title given to a startup that’s positioned as a news tracker of sorts specifically aimed at ranking new posts, pages, developments, etc., in the world of blogs. Simple enough, right? Okay.
So, you’re thinking, that’s cool, but what’s the reason for the site’s mention today? Well, dear Profy reader, it recently had itself a few updates, and we thought we’d be a right good messenger and bring you the news. And, [...]

Silicon Valley’s Most Prized Female Faces, Ranked?

Paul Glazowski

I’m not one to (publicly) pass subjective judgment on the physical properties of particular individuals’, be they of the Malibu coterie or whathaveyou, or advise you to do so. But as a reporter/opinionator of all things Web-related at the service of you, dear weblog reader, I feel it incumbent of me to give you the lowdown on the latest twist/derivative to be borne of the age-old, almost-entirely-unsubstantive Internet invention known by the name Hot or Not.
Yes, in the oh-so-shallow vein [...]

Digg To Unveil New Images Feature In Coming Weeks

Paul Glazowski

It’s been a long-requested addition that has so far been absent Digg’s feature list. Fortunately, in a few weeks’ time, the wait will be no more.
The debut of an Images-specific category on Digg is to occur “in a week or two,” according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch. (How’s he know? K. Rose told him.) It was first promised by the San Francisco-based company back in August of this year, and after a good three months, it’s about ready for release.
Some [...]

NetVouz: Bookmark You

Leslie Poston

Tossing its hat into the social bookmark ring is NetVouz.   NetVouz is competing with nearly one hundred already existing social bookmakring sites, including del.icio.us, Furl , Reddit and StumbleUpon.  In fact, there are so many sites that offer social bookmarking services we have several articles on the topic here at Profy.
Each of these social bookmarking sites tries to set itself apart by offering a unique twist or feature. For example, Digg has made its name by combining a social bookmarking feature [...]

People of Web 2.0 - HMTKSteve

Phil Butler

In case you are overtaxed with ad revenue stories and Google posturing, I thought it was about time for another installment of the people of Web 2.0. It has been a while since we looked at the individuals who make up our interesting virtual world, so I selected someone how is a quiet and interesting fixture among us. Steve De Chellis, or HMTKSteve across the Web, is a blogger, programmer and social networking guru that you may have noticed a [...]

Dotspotter Purchased By CBS For $10 Million

Michael Garrett

Celebrity gossip is big on the web, as the success of Perez Hilton and TMZ.com has shown. That is why Anthony Soohoo, a former VP at Yahoo!, founded Dotspotter in January 2007.
Essentially, Dotspotter is Digg for celebrity news, photos and video, aggregating content from various celebrity websites and blogs.
Now, just 10 short months after its incarnation, it has been reported that CBS will become the new owner of the web service at a cost of $10 [...]

Newsvine Purchased By MSNBC: A Win-Win Situation?

Paul Glazowski

Newsvine, a social news site that puts heavier emphasis on content than community (setting it apart from Digg) and is far less technology-oriented than the biggest star in the market (again, Digg) has been purchased by MSNBC.
The social website’s new parent is likely to incorporate into its own operations some of the facets that have made Newsvine a successful enterprise. Being that it is as much an aggregator of news as a venue for discussion around topics and stories [...]

Dynamic Trend Prediction Engine

Leslie Poston

ZiiTrend is taking Web 2.0 in a new direction by attempting to harness it to make social predictions. It's a pretty neat concept, actually. Anyone can join and set up a short profile with an avatar. Once you've set up your profile you can start browsing predictions or making predictions right away.
Once a prediction in made, the community can see it and toss in their two cents about it.  You can click on the prediction itself to get to the [...]

Free versus Subscription - Show Me the Money!

Phil Butler

Should we expect everything on the Web to be free? Is anything really free even on ad supported sites? I was reading a post on the AuditorumA blog today - dealing with these very questions - and I think it is about time we wrestled with free versus paid as models for monetization. I have talked with AuditoriumA's CEO Tony Mars on a couple of occasions and I reviewed his upscale human search site last month. Tony makes some valid [...]

Google Gets In On Social Bookmarking

Michael Garrett

Considering how popular that social bookmarking has become and the fact that Google is the most used search engine, a social bookmarking site for the search giant seems far overdue. Google has already been offering a bookmark service, but saved bookmarks were stored privately in user's accounts, which left the social aspect lacking.
Perhaps Google is going along with the saying 'better late than never' as it has now launched Shared Stuff (creative name, huh?), which seems like a [...]
