Propeller Launches; Netscape Becomes Portal Again

Michael Garrett

If you have been a user of Netscape (the social news site), then you have heard about the planned changes being made by AOL to revert Netscape.com back to being a basic web portal.
Well, those changes have gone into effect today, as the successor to the social news site made its debut with a new URL and name, Propeller.com.
If you are looking for new features or innovations, look elsewhere, because there is nothing new here, other than the logo and [...]

Are MySpace, Facebook and Digg Done?

Phil Butler

The latest news from Silicon Valley is that key investors appear to be redirecting their focus. VC entrepreneurs have shoveled untold millions into startups that target primarily teenagers and younger demographics on social networks. Was this a well thought out investment strategy for the long term? I have said many times before that the “numbers” game of MySpace, Bebo, Digg and others is really reflective of migratory users within the same visitor matrix. Here is why I think MySpace, Facebook [...]

AOL To Get Back Into Social News Game With ‘Propeller’

Paul Glazowski

Just over a month ago, we told you of AOL’s planned retirement of the social news structure of Netscape. Just a week ago, the website was officially removed for good. Yesterday, AOL announced its plans to enter the social news game once more.
I guess the company’s not giving up on its dream of profiting off a Digg clone quite yet.
I don’t know whether to call it a reinvention of the Calacanis model or simply a reinstitution of what was [...]

TryThis Offers Innovative Approach To Recommendations

Michael Garrett

Up until recently, I have found it difficult to use the internet to my advantage when I need help finding the best brand of a product to buy or to get some help finding, say, the best places to eat on a budget.
For this purpose, I have found Twitter and Pownce quite useful, once you build up enough followers, and also Yahoo! Answers, which has been wildly popular while Google's offering faded away.
TryThis is a new service that provides a [...]

Notifir - Track Your Social Bookmarking Accounts

Michael Garrett

There are several different social bookmarking sites around, and many people use more than one of them on a daily basis. Keeping track of all of these account can be time-consuming. Until now, there has not really been a service that aims to make this task easier.
Notifir is an interesting new tracking service, which has just gone public, that plans to simplify the process of managing and keeping track of social bookmarking accounts from one central location.
Eventually, the service [...]

What Does The Future Hold For Netscape.com?

Michael Garrett

You may remember Paul Glazowski's Netscape article last month, which mentioned that AOL was considering axing the social news service for a more traditional portal.
Now, there are more details available about the current Netscape.com, the coming features, and what could happen down the road.
Yesterday, TechCrunch revealed that Netscape will probably become more like the portal, while the current social news site could move to a new domain.
Netscape has been criticized for being a "Digg-clone," but I do not [...]

Phoja - Build Discussions Around Photos

Michael Garrett

Phoja is a new social community that is focused around photographs.
At first glance, it seemed like a Flickr-Digg mashup with its ranking system, but then I realized the differences, and the true potential that Phoja has.
This Melbourne-based startup was established in mid-2007 with an aim to encourage social discussion and community recommendations based on photographs.
The way I see it, there are 2 primary ways in which Phoja can be beneficial for users. Not including, of course, the benefits from [...]

The Latest Digg Revision: Superb

Paul Glazowski

Yesterday, Digg introduced a new layout. It’s one I welcome wholeheartedly.
Before, the menu at the top was arranged in decent fashion, but was nonetheless a bit too crowded. Categories were “smushed” close together. It wasn’t the prettiest it could be. The newest notch on Digg’s evolutionary timetable, however, is very lovely indeed. Much more so than its ancestor. Without question.
The new arrangement is undoubtedly more user friendly. Whereas one could previously travel to various sectors of the website [...]

Streamy - Invites to the Alt Digg

Phil Butler

Today Streamy Co-Founder Donald Mosites provided the catalyst for further discussion about the “Digg Killer” phenomenon we touched on last night. Streamy is a news networking service that has been swept into this “Digg Killer” maelstrom. However this superbly designed platform should be classified as “Alt Digg” because it is just an alternative. I doubt CBS news or ABC news were ever dubbed the “NBC News Killer”, and Streamy's founders really have no such claims either. Donald and I chatted earlier today [...]

What’s A Digg Killer – MySpace News, AOL Netscape, Google Reader?

Phil Butler

I was just reading a short article by a friend about the use of the term "Digg Killer" and how it is used too often and inappropriately. We all have a tendency to compare things, but why is it that everything has to be a Digg or Google killer? I guess there is nothing wrong with comparisons and they are even helpful when trying to describe a difficult concept or startup, but maybe we should all spend more time describing "the thing" than [...]
