IAC Buys StarNet Interactive: Barry Diller Is One Smart Cookie

There's been a little bit of buzz today about the news that IAC bought StarNet Interactive, the Israeli start-up that created GirlSense, but nowhere near the buzz it's gotten in my house. StarNet was spun out in late 2006 with $2.7 million USD in venture capital, and the details of the deal with IAC have been leaked, but however much he got for it, my bet is that Barry Diller got himself a great deal. |
Disney 2.0 Part III: eXtreme Tween Socializing

I saved the last part of the Disney Online suite of social apps for the last part of my series, mainly because I knew it was going to take days for me to get any information out of my eight-year-old. She's not dumb, and knows how to milk one of her "site reviews" for all they are worth in terms of getting more computer time. However, she is the main reason that I attended the Rich Internet Experiences and the [...] |

Yesterday, I covered Disney Fairies, the social network for children as young as 6, as it was discussed during the Rich Internet Experiences and the Social Graph with the Disney Touch at Web 2.0 Expo last week by Jason Vasquez, Director of Technology, Family Group - Disney Online, but Disney doesn't stop at the kids. They know that in order to really ensure complete brand adoption, they have to get the entire family involved, and Vasquez covered the division he [...] |

It may sound strange, but the single session I most wanted to attend at last week's Web 2.0 Expo was Rich Internet Experiences and the Social Graph with the Disney Touch, which ended up being presented by Jason Vasquez, Director of Technology, Family Group - Disney Online. Sponsored sessions tend to be sparsely populated with people who have a full conference pass, but as a parent, the Disney social media machine is in full swing in my house on a [...] |

There've been a lot of news articles lately about MMOGs for the tween set. If you've missed them, Disney is adding ads to their "free" version of Toontown, as well as launching a new MMOG based on the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movie series this fall. The hottest toys right now in the tween set are Webkinz, cheap little stuffed animals that are your key to the online world where kids can play games, earn KinzCash, and interact with [...] |

In the news yesterday YouTube announced they plan to test new fingerprinting technology that will address the copyright issues that are causing them huge legal woes. Women in Web 2.0: The Mommyblogger

A few weeks ago, I started noticing a trend in some of the latest community site releases from some heavy hitters. iVillage was rolling out a new community feature. Even the usually hyper-paranoid-about-image Disney was launching a user-created content site. There definitely seems to be a trend with companies to attracting women, particularly mothers, to Web 2.0 sites. |
