Hi5 Catches Flak from EMI

Triston McIntyre

It should be unstated by now that websites and media groups will never be free of torment from record labels and music protection groups.  In fact, I hardly give a moment's notice to "news" about some website or college student coming under prosecution from the RIAA or one of its many cronies.
I am, however, keenly interested when a social network or media site comes under fire for user-created content.   Today I read that popular social network Hi5 is [...]

Qtrax Finally Launches. Sort Of.

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Qtrax finally launched, reaching a milestone that many thought would never happen. After huge delays in getting up and running, some of which led to contracts with record labels expiring and then having to be renewed, they are up and running.
Well, sort of.
Qtrax’s launch was supposed to provide free and legal music from EMI and Universal, with more labels in negotiations. But after all the delays, there are still far too many things missing. One being a version of the [...]

Qtrax: Still Vaporware

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Qtrax had some “big” news today; they renewed their existing licenses with EMI Music Publishing and Sony/ATV. When I read the news, I went looking for a press release on their site and couldn't find a thing. I'm guessing at this point, Qtrax just wants to launch, and any intermediate steps between their current status and launch are just reminders of how badly their one botched attempt went.
The new-”ish” deal doesn't really help Qtrax in their quest to get up [...]

Whats The Deal At Qtrax?

Michael Garrett

For those of you who have not yet heard of Qtrax, it is an upcoming peer-to-peer (P2P) music service, aiming to offer free high-quality music from major labels in exchange for being served advertising while utilizing the Qtrax website and service. Think of the free model in use at SpiralFrog for an idea. In fact, some former SpiralFrog executives have signed on to perform consulting for Qtrax.
Despite seeming to be a completely legit service however, there is apparently a misunderstanding [...]

Sony BMG, Last Holdout In DRM Wars, Finally Caves To Demand

Paul Glazowski

Well, it?s happened. Sony BMG announced it is ?finalizing plans to sell songs without copyright protection? sold via the Web.
And here we were just starting to appreciate the resistance the recording giant had thus far erected in the face of inevitable change.
Okay, actually, to be straight with you, no, we didn?t so much as give the company a passing smirk in our own coverage of its stubborn refusal to bend to consumer demand. But let?s shelve the nasty talk [...]

Beatles Downloads To (Finally) Arrive Sometime in ‘08

Paul Glazowski

For several years now the digital-music-downloading world has been able to enjoy albums new and old purchased and transmitted via the Web. Millions of songs sit on Web servers, ready for purchase by consumers, and purchase they do. Over three billion songs have already been sold on Apple?s iTunes service alone. With all others such online outlets combined, the total number of downloads is no doubt many, many more.
But there is one particular catalogue of music albums that has [...]

iMeem Partners with EMI

Leslie Poston

What would happen if one of the "big four" music companies partnered with a social network? We're about to find out. In the news this week is the new partnership between social discovery network iMeem and music company EMI .
As of this week, users of iMeem have access to the complete EMI music digital catalog. iMeem launched their own ad-supported digital content social network earlier in the year, and having the vast EMI catalog at their disposal will only help [...]

Record Companies vs iTunes: A Fight Of Deeply Flawed Logic

Paul Glazowski

I’ve heard continuously over the past few months of growing friction between Apple, its iTunes marketplace, and the major record companies. Yes, the one’s that have been selling their content through iTunes. And at quite a fast pace, as of late. (What is the count of tracks sold now? 3 billion? 3.5? 4? Somewhere in that area, I presume.)
And quite honestly, I’ve never really understood why they haven’t being playing very well together. I mean, sure, they’ve got their [...]

iTunes Plus Pricing To Drop To 99 Cents Per Track; Indie Labels To Join Marketplace

Paul Glazowski

Confirmed: Apple has dropped iTunes Plus track prices to $0.99.
Word has it that Apple?s planning to cease its systematic gouging of its customers as far as music sales go. Jacqui Cheng of Ars Technica claimed yesterday evening to receive advanced notice from a source close to Cupertino?s super-secretive avenue, Infinite Loop, that those buying single iTunes Plus tracks now (and the last hundred or so yesterdays) would soon find prices affixed to the online store?s DRM [...]

While DRM Moves Out, Watermarks Move In

Paul Glazowski

The news many weeks back of music giant EMI’s transfer to a DRM-free existence on the Web, and the subsequent decision by Universal Music Group that came only days ago to do the same with its catalogue, has been accepted with (mostly) open arms by the blogosphere. Yes, there are some particulars concerning where the tracks have been chosen to be sold and whether the switch is temporary or in fact a permanent one that have kept a number of [...]
