Flickr Slated To Publicly Unveil New Maps And Places Features Today

Paul Glazowski

Last month we brought you word that Flickr would be launching “geotag”-centric upgrades.
One upgrade would be a new, more enhanced world map, enabling easier access to the world of photographs – now numbered at two-billion-plus – uploaded to the website’s servers. The photo service also claimed to be near the release of something called Flickr Places, which would enable one to limit searches to specific locations and see a variety of information deemed relevant to a particular [...]

Microsoft To Challenge Flickr, Among Other Web Media Outfits, With New Service

Paul Glazowski

Hey everybody, Microsoft’s putting together a Flickr competitor!
Yes, it’s true. Haven’t you heard? Shocking it is that the world has so far failed to take notice of this revelation. Much notice, anyway. As reported in CNET’s Webware publication – and not many news outlets elsewhere – Redmond has let known its intentions (via a job posting, no less) to make itself a much more viable competitor in the realm of online media; in particular, the segment of photography.
And [...]

Adobe Photoshop Express Slated For Beta Release By End Of 2007

Paul Glazowski

We brought you word first in early March 2007 of Adobe’s development of a Web-based Photoshop utility. Then in early September, Adobe broke its silence on the subject once more to an audience at Photoshop World. There it whet the palate of the masses with a brief teaser. A month later, at the company’s Max 2007 conference, it all but pulled the curtain off the project entirely, offering a brief demo that the blogosphere grew quite excited over.
Yesterday, Adobe let [...]

Michael Garrett

Online photo sharing service Flickr, which recently announced new geotagging abilities, now has two more new updates that will be introduced soon.
Flickr users have long requested photo-editing capabilities which are now planned to be integrated within the coming months after the announcement of Flickr's partnership with online photo-editing service Picnik. Few details have been released but this deal is sure to shake up the mix of third-party online photo editors that are currently offering integration with Flickr.

Paul Glazowski

What do you think of Flickr? It’s a nice bit of code, eh? It’s got good looks, good feature set, good functionality. It’s a pretty elegant package, wouldn’t you agree?
Well, expect it to get even better real soon, because it’s going to be getting some enhancements to its interface and map utility in the next few weeks. How do I know? They’ll be showing a preview of the new stuff today at O’Reilly’s Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.

Yahoo! Is Better Broken Than Whole, Says Analyst

Paul Glazowski

Reuters published an interview with a market analyst a few days ago concerning Yahoo!’s present health status as a giant Web portal, and I think some of the points mentioned in the piece are worth highlighting here on Profy. Let’s get right into it.
The analyst, Jeffrey Lindsay, an associate of Sanford C Bernstein, spoke of what many in the past have argued in the past, which is that Yahoo! “would be worth far more to shareholders if it broke up [...]

Anyone who has used Facebook knows the usefulness that the news feed provides. You can keep track of the online activity of your friends among various websites, now that there is a wide variety of available apps.
Now, take all the features of the Facebook News Feed, put them on their own as a service, and you have Friendfeed.
Once users provide the service with who they want to keep in touch with, they have a one-stop location to find out [...]

Today, it was announced that Yahoo! has decided to purchase Zimbra for $350 million in cash.
Zimbra's product line includes AJAX-based e-mail, a calendar, contact management features, as well as additional mashups available through add-ons called Zimlets. With the acquisition of the open source office suite, Yahoo! has now stated that it can "leverage the strengths of Yahoo!'s advertising platform and Yahoo!'s content network and tightly integrate it into Zimbra using Zimlets."
With this one move, Yahoo has now entered into the [...]

Living Memory: Trying to Do Everything

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Are we reaching over-saturation for Web 2.0 apps? It seems like 100 new apps are launched every day, but at least 99 of those are something we've already seen before. In this category falls Living Memory , the latest entrant in the family social networking space.
I'm going to be blunt; the site design is overly busy and kludgy. It may be that I'm just used to the usual clean designs of Web 2.0 sites with lots of white space and [...]
