You Will Hardly Make Billions Blogging but You Can Be a Blogging Billionaire

Svetlana Gladkova

The expert in all things related to rich people Forbes has published a list of billionaires who are also bloggers. And while the title “The Billionaire Bloggers” may sound encouraging to some suggesting that these people made their huge money blogging, the truth is that the only thing the article proves is that you can be both a billionaire and a blogger - but unfortunately there will hardly be any connection between your two statuses.
Forbes currently has a total of [...]

Girl Tech

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I generally don't consider myself a raging feminist, but I have had days, like today, where the gender divide seems so wide as to to be insurmountable.
Let's take the past month, for example. Within just the past few weeks, we've seen the launch of WoWoWoW, or however you want to attempt to type that, a “Huffington Post” just for women. Now, let's forget that The HuffPo is one of the biggest political (and just about anything else now) sites out [...]

Will Barcode-Embedded Ads Work For Google?

Michael Garrett

To increase the footprint of Google's AdWords service from online advertising to print advertising, the search engine giant is relying on a new implementation of barcode technology. According to the Silicon Alley Insider, Google is placing high expectations on small, square barcodes (as seen in the image at left) to be strategically placed at the bottom of print ads. These barcodes can then be scanned by a reader with a compatible camera phone, which would then instantly direct their phone's [...]

What To Expect When The 700MHz Auction Rolls Around

Paul Glazowski

It’s January 1st, and we’re creeping ever closer to the day of the 700MHz spectrum auction, a so far widely publicized event to be orchestrated by the FCC. Some 260 or so applicants have submitted their names as participants in the process, including Google, AT&T, Qualcomm, and Alltel. Even Chevron is on the roster.
We mention this contest once more here at Profy for the fact that Forbes, a highly-regarded publication with a primarily business-centric focus, recently put forth [...]

Forbes Publishes 2nd Annual ‘Web Celeb 25′

Paul Glazowski

Forbes published Tuesday evening its second annual Web Celeb 25 list highlighting the most influential – both positively and negatively, we suspect – names known throughout the digital ether that have had the most impact on the 2007 zeitgeist of buzztastic junk.
Now, before we go any further and share some feelings about the picks as chosen by the business magazine, we feel it imperative to start with a question, short and simple: Why the cold shoulder? Why no Profy [...]

LiveJournal - Russian Expression Tool?

Phil Butler

LiveJournal has been around since 1999 as a “standby” of blogging and social networking. Yesterday Six Apart (which owns LJ) agreed to sell the company to SUP a Russian online media company. The complete terms of the deal are not available but SUP will evidently create an American management company to manage the social network's operations. Media company buyouts have been abundant in a sort of “feeding frenzy” for social media traffic and I think we can expect [...]

Yahoo! Opens Up Home Page To Outsiders

Michael Garrett

Anyone who visits the Yahoo! website frequently may have noticed how every story, article, or link on the home page leads visitors to yet another Yahoo! page.
Today, however, that has changed as Yahoo! has begun including links to outside content. No visual changes or anything immediately noticeable, but the external links provided by editors are now there.
This is a first for the web portal and has been done as part of the company's move towards “openess” and helping Yahoo! [...]

Nielsen and Net Rankings: Still Not Getting It

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Nielsen/NetRatings announced this week that they were going to change the way they rank web sites, moving from prioritizing page views in determining sites' popularity to "total minutes" and "total sessions."
What was immediately clear from the announcement and the initial coverage is that the Powers That Be in the web popularity game are still not getting it, and neither are the media outlets, many of whom are probably buying ads based on this antiquated system.
Forbes references "increasingly using a software [...]

ReputationDefender Adds MyEdge

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

A few months back I wrote a piece involving online reputation tracking. One of the companies I discovered at the time was ReputationDefender, a company that would monitor your online reputation for a monthly fee, and then help eliminated any invasive or defamatory information, if found, for an additional fee.
What happens, however, if the information that ReputationDefender is neither unfair nor something you can legally force someone to remove? After all, with search engine caching and services like the [...]

WeWin Partners with Yahoo!

Phil Butler

We recently reviewed a site called WeWin.com where users are rewarded for sharing and viewing video. We really like the site, with a few reservations, as the incentive based community is innovative and entertaining. In a press release by Market Wire - February 5, WeWin and Mondera announced a campaign that would award $5000 in gift certificates redeemable at Modera.com during the month of February. Mondera was voted “Best of the Web” by Forbes Magazine and is recognized for its quality gems [...]
