SocialMedian Discovers a Totally New Way to Use Twitter for Business

Svetlana Gladkova,

We have already seen tons of things people do on Twitter to help their business - marketing people selling staff, community managers engaging in various activities with their users, startups providing technical support, bloggers hunting for scoops and promoting their articles. But Jason Goldberg, CEO of the recently launched to the public SocialMedian has found a new (and kind of unexpected) way to use Twitter for business: he is attempting to raise investment right within the microblogging service.
True, it is [...]

Language Learning Startup Babbel.com Raises Undisclosed Amount of Funding

Svetlana Gladkova,

As someone who constantly faces the necessity of learning and improving one's English, I have a fascination with tools that help people learn new languages online. And today one of such tools, the Germany-based Babbel.com raised "significant VC funding" by Kizoo and VC Fonds Berlin and also announced a new feature to improve the users' leaning experience.
I actually have a problem with this announcement - I don't understand why companies choose to announce the new funding round and [...]

Twitter’s Funding Finally Revealed

Triston McIntyre,

Though it's been some time coming, Twitter has finally revealed its private funding sources. With the latest boost in funding, the Twitter team should be able to deliver on its promise to the community to boost support for the platform across the board.
Twitter revealed, at long last, its sources of private funding, which are Bijan Sabet of Spark Capital and Jeff Bezos of his very own Bezos Expeditions. Neither investors are what you'd call small-time, as Sabet [...]

MySpace Is Branching Out Into Web StartUp Field

Leslie Poston,

MySpace is about to gain back some of its cutting edge status by launching a separate venture that will act as a nurturing incubator for web start ups. Still in development under the guiding hands of MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe, the start up will offer a place for new web ventures to get their sea legs.
This new venture will be a spin off from MySpace. Reports say the name tentatively chosen is SlingShot Labs. DeWolfe said that [...]

Virtual Assistants: The New Must-Have in 2008?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira,

I know that there have been many days when I wish I was a Hollywood celebrity just so I could have my own personal assistant to run all my errands, keep track of my appointments, and fetch me coffees. When I spotted three different services and apps designed to do at least a bit of that work for me, I rejoiced, hoping that a trend is in the air this year that will bring me the ideal artificial assistant.
The first [...]

MyStrands Music Service Attracts $24 Million Of Funding

Paul Glazowski,

We’ve covered the MyStrands social music service/network several times here at Profy. First in December of 2006. Then in late January, when we spoke of several enhancements made. Then in mid-March, when MyStrands tacked on a nifty mobile component to its repertoire. And, lastly, in early September, when we brought you word of the launch of MyStrands TV.
Now it’s safe to say the company (we presume it’s past the “startup” stage) is doing quite well for itself. [...]

Venture Capitalism - Indispensable

Phil Butler,

Venture Capital has played such a key role in the wildfire spread of Web 2.0 startups and innovations this last year. As writers we often report on funding for this company or that, but I think we seldom think of what this money goes for, how it is offered or what a big role it plays in the technologies we find so useful and fascinating.
I have touched on the nature of VC in many posts and most recently [...]

Joost Secures $45 Million In Additional Funding

Paul Glazowski,

What do Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, CBS Corp, Viacom, and Li Ka-shing (a really rich Chinaman) have in common? They all bet their pants on Joost. $45 million in slacks, as of early May.
Actually, high-priced fabrics weren’t part of the bargain. (I’m not so sure that’s the right word to use in this context, but anyhow.) Just paper. Lots of it. Is it just me or does it seem like Joost has been hogging headline space quite a bit as [...]
