LimitNone: Why You Should Build a Product, Not a Feature

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

LimitNone is learning a very difficult, and probably very expensive, lesson: you need to build a product of your own, and not a feature for someone else's product.
The start-up had an agreement with Google that allowed Google to see their "trade secrets" for an app they had built to bridge users from Microsoft Outlook into Gmail. When Google turned around and built out a feature to do the same thing, LimitOne filed suit for deceptive business practices. They claim that [...]

Google Gears and Bringing 2.0 to the Desktop: The Real Question is Why

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Just call me out of touch, but I just don't get the idea behind moving Google Apps offline. You can give me talking points about competing with Microsoft and unified functionality all you want, but in the long run, what does it do other than create a circle that seems nothing more than keeping developers in jobs.
The two hallmarks of Web 2.0 have been making the web social and removing the reliance on the desktop. Google Apps and [...]

Spokeo: I’m Almost Certain They Meant Spooky-o

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I've heard dribs and drabs of news about Spokeo over the past year, but it took a push from Guy Kawasaki's blog over the holidays to actually get me to log in and check it out.
Spokeo, if you haven't heard about it, is an all-in-one aggregator for all your social networking sites, from Amazon wishlists to YouTube videos. In all, 33 sites are currently supported in Spokeo, allowing you to keep tabs on every site in one place.
Here's what's [...]

The Duncan Riley News: Data Portability Goes Prime Time

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Everyone on Twitter today has been holding their collective breath waiting for 1 PM PST, when Duncan Riley's post at TechCrunch would go live. The big news? Facebook, Google, and Plaxo joined the Data Portability Workgroup.
I suppose, for me at least, this huge news was actually a let-down. Anyone who followed last week's PR debacle when Facebook banned Robert Scoble really should have seen this coming. They already faced down the backlash over Beacon, so this seemed like a [...]

NetSuite, A Web-Based Enterprise Software Maker, Slated To Go Public

Paul Glazowski

Update: NetSuite goes live on the NYSE today (Thurs Dec 20) with a raised price of $26 per share.
An IPO’s a-comin’! And the technological debutante having its public market premiere is none other than NetSuite.
Yes, the maker of software-by-subscription for a range of needs, including accounting, CRM (customer relationship management), and e-commerce, NetSuite is celebrating almost 10 years in business by tossing some stocks out to investors the world over – Dutch auction style. The New York Times [...]

Office Live Workspace: Microsoft’s (Late) Answer To Google Apps

Michael Garrett

Google Apps has been far more successful than Microsoft could have imagined, which I am sure is why their reaction to Google's enterprise agenda was less than impressive.
Now, Microsoft seems to have realized the benefits of the web, finally bringing its Office Suite online with Office Live Workspace, which is currently running in beta to a limited number of people.
With Google Apps, Zimbra (recently purchased by Yahoo!), and Zoho having already built an online following, is it too late for [...]

Yahoo Buys Zimbra For $350 Million

Michael Garrett

Today, it was announced that Yahoo! has decided to purchase Zimbra for $350 million in cash.
Zimbra's product line includes AJAX-based e-mail, a calendar, contact management features, as well as additional mashups available through add-ons called Zimlets. With the acquisition of the open source office suite, Yahoo! has now stated that it can "leverage the strengths of Yahoo!'s advertising platform and Yahoo!'s content network and tightly integrate it into Zimbra using Zimlets."
With this one move, Yahoo has now entered into the [...]

Google Presently Will Soon Take On Microsoft PowerPoint

Michael Garrett

Google Apps has been presenting more and more of a threat to the Microsoft Office suite, and Microsoft is well aware although their recent actions are what I would consider lame.
Google is not wasting any time in providing one feature that Office provides, but Google Apps currently lacks. Presentations.
PowerPoint has long been the standard for creating slideshow presentations, but Google is directly targeting this software's market with a new web-based presentation application, known as Presently.
The Enquirer has reported today that [...]

Microsoft Retaliates With 10 Reasons Not To Use Google Apps

Michael Garrett

Just yesterday, the big news was that Google had announced a partnership with IT firm CapGemini in an effort to expand the use of Google Apps in enterprise environments.
This, of course, brought Google even closer to rivaling Microsoft's Office suite, which has now spurred a reaction from the Redmond software giant.
No, its not new software or updates for the popular productivity suite, but rather Microsoft's own reasoning on why businesses should NOT use Google Apps.
Microsoft has stated that [...]

Google And French IT House CapGemini Forge Ties

Paul Glazowski

Google Apps, an online suite, has for months been positioned as an inexpensive collection of simple and useful utilities for (mostly) small business and educational institutions. Today it’s hoping to start expanding its client base in a big way.
The Mountain View-based company behind the series of products has announced CapGemini as major partner in the delivery its solutions to businesses big (some very big) and small. The announcement effectively thrusts the calendar-email-word-processor-spreadsheet-etc. concoction straight into a world in which business-to-business [...]
