Recently Google has introduced to the world its latest and biggest change to the way we see search results - SearchWiki. This functionality allows any logged in Google user to vote sites up and down in search results, add notes (or comments) about certain sites and even add the results that are not there yet but should be (according to the opinion of this particular user). These actions are intended to create personalized search experience for this user when he [...] |

Google SearchWiki Does Not Influence Search Results but Already Manipulated
by

Last week Google rolled out the SearchWiki functionality for its flagship product - Google Search. The functionality allows every registered Google user to customize the search results for every search query - and get exactly the same results next time this user performs a search for the same term. SearchWiki involves voting links appearing in the search results up and down, deleting them if you feel they are not relevant at all or adding new links that are not present [...] |
Layoffs in Google – Bad but Probably Reasonable
by

Rumor of the day today is that even Google is not as immune to the recession as we used to believe with 500 people already laid off and a total of 10 thousand to be affected as well. And while the blogosphere is actively engaged in a conversation about the huge number of layoffs, everyone agrees that the rumor is most probably wrong and the number of people will not reach anything near 10,000. |
Now That Internet Economy Is In Danger, Google and Facebook Could Save It

I think everyone has been thinking for a while now about how the entire internet industry is flawed and how it will face even more serious problems in the future unless something is changed in terms of how businesses make money here. Recently every time a new startup sends me a pitch about their new product, I’ve been stubbornly asking them about exactly how they were planning to make money. |

We have recently reported on a Russian company Era Vodoleya that expressed its intentions to sue Google for a huge amount of $3 billion (which is 15% of Google’s revenues) because of Google allegedly infringing a patent with its contextual advertising technology - the one that turned Google into a multi-billion company. |

Have you ever thought about doing some really quick search on your cell phone when on the go to find some place or store nearby but thought it was too difficult (and not really quick) to type all the letters to get the answer to your quick question? I do believe the answer will be positive for many of us and now we have Google addressing this particular need on one particular phone - that is Apple’s iPhone. |
Google Makes the Next Step to a Complete Communications Suite with Voice and Video

It has looked for quite a while now that Google actually wants to be everywhere whenever we do just about anything online. Today we have yet another functionality introduced by Google to Gmail to make the Gmail experience even more all-inclusive: voice and video chat for Google Talk. Quite logical, of course, because “talk” should not really mean “type” probably so adding actual voice and even video to the IM only sounds like a good idea. |
Russian Yandex Reports Positive Contextual Ads Trends amidst Crisis

I believe Yandex is the best-known Russian internet company for the English-speaking technology community. The company resembles Google in its operations quite a lot - but a smaller one, playing mainly on the national level and only making its first steps to achieve international expansion, like opening an office in the Silicon Valley and hiring former Yahoo search expert. |
Google’s Love to Machine Translation Is beyond my Understanding

Honestly, I did not want to write about Google Reader team proudly reporting on making the world wide web truly worldwide by offering the functionality to translate any feed you read into your native language (on condition that your native language is among those supported by Google’s machine translation system). Really, I thought I have said enough about poor quality of machine translation overall and Google translation in particular as well as about the dubious practice of using volunteers for [...] |
