Microsoft just announced that they will try to acquire Fast Search & Transfer, which is a Norwegian enterprise search solution. The deal is reportedly in excess of $1 billion and is dependent on FS&T shareholder approval. The big three in search, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have been locked in this search battle for some time with Google taking the lion's share of the users. |

Interview With Powerset’s Barney Pell
by
on November 20, 2007

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article about Powerset and their recent restructuring. Today, I talked with Barney Pell one of the founders and former CEO of the startup. As I have said before many times, Barney is an extraordinary person with a brilliant vision and Powerset has been one of my favorite topics of discussion. As far as my previous post, I had some concerns over the underlying causes for Steve Newcomb's absence and also Barney's shift [...] |
Powerset - Is It Man or Mouse?

I received my much anticipated invitation to Powerset's Powerlabs the other day, and was excited to finally get an inside peek one of the years most interesting startups. I have covered Powerset many times since my first article back in January. The brainchild of Barney Pell, Steve Newcomb and Lorenzo Thione held great potential in providing natural language search relevance for the Web. Powerlabs does indicate some significant developments toward natural search, but the larger issue to me is: "Where [...] |
Hakia Unleashes “MO” - Meet Others Via Search
by
on October 31, 2007
|
Hakia is rolling out yet another aspect of their semantic search technology today. MO (or meet others) exhibits another interesting aspect of “search” by allowing people to meet other people entertaining the same queries. By adding this P2P social element to search, hakia is effectively spreading semantics (or meaning) across a much wider spectrum and toward true answers and understanding. Users simply click on the MO icon after making a query and they are taken into rooms where people have [...] |
Reaching Web 3.0
by

When will we arrive at Web 3.0? I really had no idea there were so many theories until I went to my old standby Wikipedia to get some ideas for what we have in store. Over the last year or so I have probably loosely used the term Web 3.0 to describe one great innovation or other a dozen times. For me, Web 3.0 has, to a large extent, been a term to differentiate technologies. I expect this is true [...] |
Understanding hakia - Astro Versus Scooby Doo
by

Explaining and understanding hakia and other semantic search engines has been a little more than tough for developers and potential users these past few months. Readers and users are not dense, but perhaps they are impatient and a little ADD. Developers, especially the good ones, spare no text or video to explain these complex and often abstract creations. Still, most visitors (to hakia in particular) are not willing to devote more than a few seconds to evaluate the potential of [...] |
Hakia Challenge - What Could Be More Relevant?
by
on September 22, 2007

My good friend Dr. Riza Berkan just clued me in to a new comparative feature at hakia where users can test hakia against various search engines side-by-side. This feature has been on the hakia site for a little while but Riza and hakia have not publicized it and I thought our readers would be interested. Hakia has been under the radar fora little while now, so I was really glad to get a note from Riza and some cool news [...] |
Freebase - Now Open For Searching

Freebase is an accessible database that is editable like Wikia and Wikipedia. The startup has been in private alpha testing but just opened beta doors to the public. The service is aimed at organizing the world's data. The database has been seeded with over 2 million topics from Wikipedia and other sources and this data is currently in "read" form for everyone with "write" capabilities reserved for registered users. Freebase aims to deliver on Google's promise to organize the world's [...] |
Why Wikia is Engaging Gamers
by
on August 06, 2007

Wikia is currently home to a great number of popular video gaming communities like Starcraft, Final Fantasy and Halo. Wikia Co-Founder Jimmy Wales demonstrated the new Wikia/Playxpert in-game toolbar at Wikimania Taipei last week. The toolbar allows users to search, read and contribute to Wikia's gaming community from inside the games. The new Wikia - PlayXpert toolbar also features iTunes, Facebook, Google widgets and other integrated features. Wikia has found another way to engage, retain and grow communities and content via simple collaboration. |
Hakia On Search, Privacy and Trust
by

I was visiting the hakia blog today and found an interesting post by Melek Pulatkonak their COO. Recent privacy problems in the news and particularly Google's "issues" in this area have prompted much discussion. According to this blog article hakia has initiated a second "Search for Better Search" conversation with these critical and debated issues in mind. I covered the first version of these conversations back in May after a great talk with Melek who went to great lengths to [...] |
