Newsweek’s 50 Most Influential People: Only a Handful with Tech Background

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday the Newsweek magazine introduced its traditional list of top 50 most influential and powerful people in the world. Of course the majority of the people on the list are politicians with the US presidential elections determining how the list looks like a lot. First of all, very quickly Barack Obama turned into the most powerful person in the world - even though he is not even the acting President of the US yet and still has a few weeks [...]

Do You Remember What We Did On Our Computers When We Had No Internet?

Svetlana Gladkova

This week we have seen Robert Scoble accused of playing Solitaire on his computer while sitting as a judge in the startup competition during LeWeb conference in Paris. Later on Robert explained that he only played two games during the session where he was not even a judge of himself but I don’t really care about what he did and what he did not as I was neither in the audience, nor among the startups. Besides, I have a feeling [...]

Parents Sell Their Baby Online in Belgium

Svetlana Gladkova

It looks like people can come up with absolutely unexpected ways to cope with the world financial crisis as today we hear news about a Belgium young couple selling their newborn baby online. The couple already raises one child and they explained that they decided to sell the second baby due to financial difficulties - they just did not think they could afford another child.
Same as many people thinking about selling something unusual, they decided that internet was just the [...]

No More Free Lunch Online. Good for Everyone

Svetlana Gladkova

There’s no doubt that the economic crisis we are now in now will damage some industries and change others. And of course internet will be one of the industries affected. I think it is already obvious that if there is one thing that needs to be changed and will probably change, it is the way new products are launched hoping to achieve popularity first and figure out how to monetize all the users at a later date.
Now that investors will [...]

Russian Priest Reduced to Monk for Resisting Progress and Internet

Svetlana Gladkova

This morning watching some news on TV and having breakfast I heard the words “Russian Orthodox Church” and “internet” mentioned in the same story and could not help but share the piece here. Yesterday one of Russian bishops Diomid was degraded to a usual monk for a number of wrongdoings, including prohibiting churchgoers from using cell phones and internet.
Quite obviously it is not his only fault and I don’t think that in Russia it could be viewed as a sin [...]

Why Do People Google “Internet”?

Svetlana Gladkova

Recently I have noticed an interesting thing in the traffic stats for Profy. Specifically I have started to notice people arriving from Google (mostly) and some other search engines after they do a search for a single word - “internet”. And since I always find it amusing when people google “Google” to get the same link they are actually on (and yes, Google is quite a popular search term) I thought that googling “internet” was equally amusing. After all, what [...]

Bridging the Poverty Gap, Part One

Leslie Poston

We had a fantastic Topics on Fire podcast last night on TalkShoe discussing the poverty gap and the internet and how social media could help bridge it. Because the audio recording had feedback issues, I'm doing a recap here in case we can't get that fixed. The conversation lasted an hour and will go into part two this coming Sunday, August the 3rd (and yes, I have enlisted the help of a tech for a backup recording of the next [...]

Facebook Goes Grammatical — Who Woulda Thunk It?

Triston McIntyre

It brings a tear of joy to my eye to think that a website is taking steps to become grammatically proper.  Listen, we English majors have to find satisfaction somewhere, right?  Facebook is working on a way to make grammar significantly more consistent.
Though you might not care one way or the other if your friend's status update reads, "Jimmy John is Does anyone know where the nearest Chipotle is?" Facebook is of the opinion that such odd [...]

Bridging Television and the Web

Triston McIntyre

Being able to watch television programming on the internet is a wonderful thing. Many of the big networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, etc. have already started uploading television content directly to the internet for users who don't mind watching programming on their computer screens. Of course, that puts cable providers in a bit of a pickle; if users can go directly to the source on the internet and cut out the middle men, what good will cable providers [...]

Triston McIntyre

For those looking for an alternative to the rather lengthy list of video players already available to web publishers, Userplane is certain its new and ingeniusly named Mediaplayer will appeal to those looking to bring video content to their respective websites. If you are a fan of existing Userplane applications, then Mediaplayer could certainly be right up your alley.
