Learning from Hulu’s Example

Michael Garrett,

Since its launch at the end of October, Hulu has changed the opinions of many of its negative critics with outstanding features implemented into a clean and easy-to-navigate interface.
Not only that, but the private beta testing phase that the service has been under since going live also appears to be receiving all of the attention and updates necessary to provide a successful public launch, whenever that may be planned for.
The way I see it, online video [...]

24-Hour Apple-Centric IPTV Channel Launched

Paul Glazowski,

Alright, say you?re an Apple devotee. You may be, you may not be. But, just for kicks, let?s pretend there?s a bit of a love affair going on between you and Cupertino.
How then do you satiate your craving for Apple news? Presumably with a steady diet of blog posts, the produce of rumor mills, maybe even a subscription to a magazine or two. Yes? Okay, well, that?s good and fine, but what about the video angle? How do you [...]

Will The Web Crumble Under The Weight Of Greater Demand? We Think Not

Paul Glazowski,

Every once in a while – and ever more frequently nowadays – there are those who scream of impending doom for the very existence of the Internet. And they’re not all frizzy-haired crackpots. Some are rather sane groups of individuals, who analyze the status of the Web fairly closely.
And, yes, they see current trends of Internet use as spelling doom quite clearly. Some vociferously claim to foresee a time at which the Web will collapse under the stress of excessive [...]

Internet Television Series ‘Quarterlife’ Reviewed

Paul Glazowski,

Back in September, we brought you word that an Internet television series, dubbed “Quarterlife,” would debut in November. As of last week, it was released.
Produced by Hollywood notables Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, Quarterlife has had just short of two weeks to make some first impressions with the public ? and the press ? and, quite surprisingly, it?s managed to nab itself some fairly good reviews. (Some bads have cropped up - one published yesterday in The New [...]

MySpace Debuts Today New Post-Collegiate Drama, ‘Roommates’

Paul Glazowski,

MySpaceTV, News Corp’s answer to YouTube, announced early this morning that it will today debut a serial program, called “Roommates,” which it will divvy out to the social network’s multi-million-strong viewership over the course of some 45 days (weekdays only) in brief three-minute snippets. Each new episode will be shown on MySpaceTV starting at 4pm EST, Monday through Friday.
The Web-only show follows in the path established by the producers of Prom Queen, a drama which ran over the course [...]

Joost Goes Public: It’s Updated But Still Needs Help

Michael Garrett,

It has been more than 5 months since I first began testing the invite-only beta of Joost. Today now officially marks the public launch of the online television service, and Joost proudly claims on their mildly redesigned homepage that they have accumulated 250+ channels and 15,000+ TV shows.
Although the Joost software has been updated now to version 1.0, the service makes sure to state that “Joost is still Beta software — there's a lot more work to be [...]

Today, Microsoft announced the upcoming release of Internet TV, stating that “on the morning of Sept. 28, 2007, U.S. users of Windows Vista Home Premium edition and Windows Vista Ultimate edition will find a new feature inside Media Center: the beta release of Internet TV. This new feature will allow people to enjoy a range of television and video content on their PCs and TV sets without a TV tuner in their PC.”
The free service will be supported by advertising [...]

Quarterlife: New Internet Television Series Set To Debut In November

Paul Glazowski,

Back in the day ? last spring, to be more precise ? we brought you a bit of news on a certain serial production created specifically for MySpacers. It was a project (later deemed a success by it?s creators, I might add) called ?Prom Queen,? and had quite a bit of publicity going into its debut.
Today, another MySpace exclusive had its announcement. This one?s called ?Quarterlife.? The synopsis is fairly simple: Young twentysomethings ?struggling to find their way after college.? [...]

Instant Media, Miro Competitor, Leaves The Net Without A Trace

Paul Glazowski,

Recognize the name Instant Media? No? Well, to get you a little familiar with it, you only really need to know two things: It?s a competitor of Miro, previously known as Democracy Player; and it?s dead.
I?ll be perfectly honest with you. I know very little about Instant Media. Almost nothing. Only about a half hour prior to getting to write this piece did I get some facts about the product up on my screen. So, really I pretty much know [...]

LiveStation - More Than Just Competition For Joost

Michael Garrett,

The growing list of IPTV services that allow broadband users to watch television programming through the internet now has some new competition backed by none other than Microsoft.
LiveStation, which just debuted at IBC 2007 in Amsterdam, is a service that lets you watch television online and is one of the first platforms to use Microsoft's Silverlight technology.
LiveStation has some key differences that make it unlike any of the other internet television services available, which actually make it more like traditional [...]
