Why Is Facebook Being Banned?

Michael Garrett

Isn't the idea behind Facebook to make your social life more vibrant and increase your productivity? Apparently, big business begs to differ, as the UK-based Telegraph has reported that “more than two thirds of employers are banning or restricting the use of Facebook and similar sites over fears that staff are wasting time on them when they should be working.”
This comes after the news that Australia-based Telstra has banned Facebook access to its 49,000 employees.
The problem with workplace use [...]

Federal Judge Looks at ConnectU vs. Facebook Docket, Tells Plaintiff To Get Some Evidence

Paul Glazowski

The court hearing of ConnectU’s case against Facebook (more particularly, Facebook’s frontman, Mark Zuckerberg) went on as scheduled yesterday. Judge Douglas P Woodlock presided.
And he laid a preliminary verdict out just as predicted here right here at Profy: He saw no solid evidence of illegalities concerning Facebook’s founding or its creator’s actions during establishment.
Woodlock found there to be scant proof to work on the “majority of the ten claims listed by ConnectU in its original complaint” and, [...]

ConnectU To Fight Facebook In Federal Court This Afternoon

Paul Glazowski

Today in court, two Internet-based companies – one incredibly popular and which continues to expand at a rapid rate; the other less so – will clash. Again.
Let’s synopsize a bit.
Facebook, a website created by Mark Zuckerberg with support from Andrew McCollum and Eduardo Saverin, who were later joined by Dustin Moskovitz to aid with promotion, was officially founded in February of 2004. Two years prior, a trio by the names of Divya Narendra and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss conceived of [...]

Facebook Goes with the Big Names

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

When I saw the announcement today that Facebook had acquired Parakey, I wasn't all that surprised. Sure, the name was a surprise; Parakey has been in stealth mode for over a year now, with little known about them other than the fact that it's a company founded by two Firefox co-founders: Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt. There was a tiny bit of information leaked just to let us know who the players were, that it was a Web OS, and [...]

Facebook’s Impending Lawsuit

Michael Garrett

A long debate over how Facebook began is continuing in court, as the founders of social community ConnectU, continue their ongoing lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old founder of Facebook. Apparently, before he created Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg worked with a few friends on a project called HarvardConnect.com that also was attempting to connect college students and alumni.
Zuckerberg ended up leaving that project, and eventually released Facebook, and the rest is history, with his Facebook touted to be worth more [...]

VC Firm Bay Partners Establishes Fund For Facebook Developers

Paul Glazowski

Whether you question the viability of Facebook “apps” for the long run (I am) or really are completely gung-ho from concept to end product (I’m not), it doesn’t change the fact that some in The Valley are feeling quite bullish when it comes to stuff built with APIs proffered by Zuckerberg & Co.
By some, I mean the folks at the very public venture capital firm Bay Partners. As it turns out, they’ve gone ahead and established an annex fund [...]

Facebook’s Plans For Expansion Examined

Paul Glazowski

A good amount of discussion has been taking place over the past week or so following Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s declaration of the company’s plans to expand and become, in the words of GigaOM’s Liz Gannes, a “social OS.” The way they intend to do it is to open their doors to lots of Web apps and services. If Facebook is going to make this stunt a success, they’re going to have to be very, very careful.
Sure, [...]
