Microsoft Found a New Tool To Dominate Internet – Windows

Svetlana Gladkova

Well, not exactly Windows as we know it now, it is something dubbed “Windows Cloud” (will most certainly have a different name) - a new operating system to be officially announced by Microsoft in the end of October that is intended to serve as a platform for various web applications. Microsoft seemingly takes the approach it already is familiar with by offering an OS other developers should write applications for instead of writing applications of its own and competing with [...]

Information War Continues: Yahoo Launches a Site to Explain Google Advertising Deal

Svetlana Gladkova

Sure, Yahoo-Google advertising deal to put Google ads right in search results pages on Yahoo Search has been one of the most discussed topics lately. Anti-trust authorities both in the US and Europe are investigating the deal to determine if it will damage competitive environment both in the online advertising industry (where two ad networks will start to cooperate instead of competing) and in search since for Yahoo it will be more and more difficult to compete with its own [...]

Svetlana Gladkova

Today Microsoft is announcing another huge buyout of its stock - worth $40 billion dollars. The company has already completed the previous $40 billion buyout (it was originally for $30 billion with extra $10 billion added later) of shares and now we see the next round in an attempt to improve the corporation’s financial situation.
This buyout process is scheduled to run through September 2013. At yesterday’s price $40 billion could buy Microsoft 17% of shares but after today’s announcement the [...]

Cisco Buys Jabber to Enhance Its Collaboration Tools

Svetlana Gladkova

Today Cisco has announced its intention to buy Jabber, Inc., the company behind the popular presence and messaging protocol that is used by many companies to power their instant messaging products, including Google in their GTalk as one of the most prominent example. The amount of the acquisition is not disclosed and the deal is scheduled to be completed by January.
The idea here is pretty simple - Cisco is planning to use Jabber to “extend the reach” of their existing [...]

Enjoy Your Hamburger Along With Free Wi-Fi for Your Zune

Svetlana Gladkova

It is not all that often when the technology blogosphere gets particularly excited about anything announced by Microsoft but today’s news of Zune 3.0 released along with software update and free Wi-Fi access for Zune owners in McDonald’s fast food chain is generating immense buzz today. And the range of new features is really impressive enough to deserve this type of buzz and I even think that such announcements can really help some potential customers finally make a decision to [...]

Microsoft Outbids Quadrangle Private Investment Fund by $60 Million for Greenfield

Svetlana Gladkova

Microsoft has just announced that the software giant is buying Greenfield Online, owner of European network of price comparison, shopping and consumer review websites Ciao. The acquisition is for approximately $486 million so this makes it the most expensive purchase for Microsoft.
What Ciao offers to its users is comprehensive search for products and prices based on up-to-date price information from thousands of online merchants along with reviews of the products by other users. A total number of reviews generated to [...]

ComScore Stats: Yahoo Still Reaches the Majority of Web Population with Display Ads

Svetlana Gladkova

Today comScore released a press release detailing its statistics on online display advertising in June - both largest publishers and largest advertisers. The data is quite predictable and I believe many of us (I mean, those that choose not to enable any ad blockers in their browsers): Microsoft is the largest advertiser followed by University of Phoenix (advertising its online aducation programs), Experian Interactive (advertising its sites LowerMyBills and FreeCreditReport), United Online (owner of Classmates which pushes ads to web [...]

Svetlana Gladkova

It seems that everyone has already grown accustomed to the idea of search engines market completely dominated by Google. But at the Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo Satya Nadella, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Search, Portal and Advertising Platform Group, has made a statement showing that at least the software giant sees a possibility to change the situation. And the change is in the field of better user experience based on behavioral targeting and semantic search technologies. Currently the [...]

Microsoft Proves the World Is Small – But A Little Larger Than We Expected

Svetlana Gladkova

It looks like Microsoft is pretty serious about social networking - serious enough to carry out a dedicated study to prove Kevin Bacon's law of 6 degrees (that you can be linked to by anybody else by less than 7 acquaintances).
To prove this idea Microsoft used the database of Microsoft Messenger users for the study with the major goal of finding out what's the distance between two random people on Earth if they are connected [...]

Winner for Today’s ‘Most Underwhelming Reveal’ Award Is Live.com

Leslie Poston

I was under impressed with Microsoft's Live.com Live Search page when it first came out, and have largely ignored it since. When a few of the people I follow on Twitter gave the new feature release today bad one line Twitter reviews, I felt compelled to revisit it and see what they were bothered about.
Looking over the "big news" from Microsoft I see… hot spots and images? Is that it? Wait, the hot spots also have fly overs. So, we [...]
