Almost a year and a half ago, Colbert Low posted here on Profy that the future of the Web would be 3D applications, or virtual worlds, with Second Life leading the pack. It's amazing to me that so much could have changed in such a short amount of time. |

Chumby Industries Nabs $12.5 Million in Funding

Today the makers of the recently launched (yet oddly-named) Chumby internet-connected device have acquired $12.5 million in Series B funding, primarily from JK&B Capital, a new investor for the company. Chumby's other existing venture investors, including Avalon Ventures, Masthead Venture and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, were also involved in the financing, which will be used to “accelerate growth” of the San Diego-based company, as well as to expand the Chumby Network onto other screen-based web devices. |

Late last spring we brought you word of the debut of an online venue called YouLicense, which provided place for independent music creators to license their tracks and clips to those who, well, wish to license music, whether it be for a marketing or commercial purpose, or any other purpose, really. And since June, it seems to have grown quite a bit, actually. |

Do you recall, several seasons back, MTV trying to break into the music retail online to combat (or follow, however you?d like to put it) iTunes and its steadily growing domination over the market? It made the attempt with Urge, a Windows Media Player-based outlet. As Viacom, the owner of MTV, discovered rather quickly, however, it never quite made much of a name for itself, despite a hefty publicity push. (It is now residing in merger with Real Networks' Rhapsody.) |

TV Networks apparently have their eyes on Twitter as a new marketing strategy. According to the Wall Street Journal, ABC, CBS, MTV and NBC have started to experiment with the year-old service as a way to communicate with potential viewers and consumers. This seems like a potentially lucrative idea, considering that users are able to receive messages via SMS, IM, email or the Twitter website. |
