Fleeing From Prosecution? Avoid Posting Your Whereabouts to MySpace

Svetlana Gladkova

There’s a hilarious story today on Washington Post about a criminal making his location and phone known to the police by posting both to his MySpace profile.
What we logically expect for a fugitive is to hide somewhere and try to avoid police and other officials leading a very reserved life. But this was definitely not something a criminal charged with stealing two monkeys in Pennsylvania was prepared to do with his life after fleeing the state and settling in Southern [...]

MySpace Stats Show Huge Disproportion in Online Advertising

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday at TechCrunch 50 conference Michael Arrington interviewed MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe. One of the questions they discussed was about revenue the social network generated and the most interesting revelation of the discussion was that only 9 countries generate 95% of all advertising revenue for MySpace.
Sure, it is a well-known fact that users from some countries are monetized easier than users from other countries - with usually everything beyond the Northern America and Europe considered to be poorly monetized international [...]

MySpace Is Doing Better Than Expected in Russia

Svetlana Gladkova

When MySpace launched a localized version in Russia, tons of people were very skeptic about its future with some of the Russian experts predicting that MySpace only has chances for growth of the Russian-language audience if the company spends at least $2-$3 million a year on marketing and promotion. The explanation for skepticism (my own one included) was simple: Russia already has plenty of social networks of its own with some of them gaining truly mainstream popularity.
Now that MySpace has [...]

Svetlana Gladkova

Today MySpace is launching what is said to be its biggest film promotion campaign to date. The campaign is intended to prepare for successful opening night of the latest Walt Disney Co’s blockbuster franchise “High School Musical 3″. The campaign is intended to market the sequal of the company’s huge television hit to multi-million MySpace audience.
The contest is launched on MySpace today and will run for two months through November 3. During the contest participating high schools will perform various [...]

ComScore Stats: Yahoo Still Reaches the Majority of Web Population with Display Ads

Svetlana Gladkova

Today comScore released a press release detailing its statistics on online display advertising in June - both largest publishers and largest advertisers. The data is quite predictable and I believe many of us (I mean, those that choose not to enable any ad blockers in their browsers): Microsoft is the largest advertiser followed by University of Phoenix (advertising its online aducation programs), Experian Interactive (advertising its sites LowerMyBills and FreeCreditReport), United Online (owner of Classmates which pushes ads to web [...]

XIHA Life to Compete for Music Bands with MySpace

Svetlana Gladkova

Today the multilingual social network XIHA Life (”xiha” means “fun” and “happy” in Mandarin and also “Hip-Hop” in Cantonese so it should be pronounced “ziha” following the rules of Chinese language) officially debuts in the US and offers a global music distribution channel to musicians worldwide. The social network positions itself as a truly multilingual community as it supports 34 languages (with more promised to come soon) and allows users to communicate using as many languages as they actually understand.
The [...]

International Social Networks are Unwanted Invaders in Russia, Too

Svetlana Gladkova

Since I am not in the US, it is always fascinating to see some international news going big among US journalists and readers - so today's article in the New Your Times titled "An Innocent Abroad" was a great refreshment to me. The article has a lot of valid points about how the internet Anglosphere views the rest of the internet - I mean those of us that are wired but don't have English as their native [...]

MySpace Makes Big Announcement the Day Before Facebook Developer Conference – OpenID Support

Svetlana Gladkova

Mere hours after Michael Arrington reported that his sources suggested that MySpace would roll out support of OpenID some time later this week, the rumors have been confirmed officially in a press release. And it would have been strange not to expect a big announcement from MySpace the day before Facebook’s developer conference, right?
So initially MySpace will serve as an issuer of login credentials for its users (so that their MySpace URLs can be used as logins for other sites [...]

Sell Flickr Photos on Getty? Say What?

Triston McIntyre

For whatever reason, when I read that a select few Flickr users will be able to license their photos through Getty, the Black Eyed Peas song "Where is the Love?" came to mind — not because I believe aspiring professional photographers who participate in the Flickr community have a particular affinity for the BEPs, but because the whole proposal has a sort of Willy Wonka's golden ticket air to it that rubs me the wrong way. Though [...]

Fringers Taste the Fruits of Fring’s Open API

Triston McIntyre

If you've been lingering around Profy for a while, you might recall that I recently covered the mobile social platform Fring along with others like Xumii.  You might also recall that Fring opened its API to developers interested in designing mobile social applications.  Just a few weeks since that announcement, developers have already delivered two heavy-hitting applications to the Fring community.
That's right, merely weeks after announcing the release of its API to developers, Fring has landed applications for [...]
