Michael Garrett

Apparently, NBC Universal cannot wait for the launch of Hulu (its joint venture with News Corp.) to offer its full episodes online to viewers.
Via a press release, NBC has announced that it will be offering its top television shows for users to download up to a week after broadcast. The videos will be ad-supported, which will allow NBC to provide the shows for free. Confirmed shows for the launch include Heroes, The Office, Life, Bionic Woman, 30 Rock, Friday Night [...]

Amazon-NBC Deal Signals Rough Road Ahead For Network On The Web

Paul Glazowski

The Web is abuzz with talk over who in the Apple-NBC debacle is the worst off for the planned severance to come next week, when The Peacock’s fall programming has its public debut. Profy’s very own Cyndy Aleo-Carreira covered the news soon after it broke, and now we receive word that, following its exit from the iTunes shop, NBC has tapped Amazon for the distribution of its content for the season ahead. So we figured we’d pick the story apart [...]

NBC Taking Its Toys from the iTunes Sandbox?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The music industry as we know it is dying. The problem is that the industry wants to keep the machines running as long as they can, while new technology is standing by waiting for the organ donations.
All that's necessary to come to this conclusion is to look at how the record companies have handled new technology. They had a virtual goldmine sitting in their laps with Napster, but instead, fear drove them to attempt to dismantle it, assuming P2P file [...]

News Corp. And NBC’s Video Venture Is Named Hulu

Michael Garrett

You may remember my recent post about how the joint venture between News Corporation and NBC Universal had earned a valuation of $1 billion, even though it had yet to be named since it's March announcement.
Well, now a decision has been reached. In news that is well overdue, NBC and News Corp. have now announced an official name for their joint venture.
Hulu. It's four letters that took five months to create. It sounds a little funny, but I think that [...]

Michael Garrett

Comcast has now opened the doors on a beta version of Fancast, its entertainment portal that will aim to be ?the one place where you can find what to watch, where to watch, when to watch it — plus all the video, photos and facts you crave.?
Fancast is now open to the public and provides a comprehensive database of TV shows, movies, actors, directors, movie trailers and various other video clips. Think of it as web 2.0 meets IMDB meets [...]

NBC, News Corp, and the $1 Billion “Idea”

Michael Garrett

In case you haven't heard, NBC & News Corp. recently received $100 million in venture funding from Providence Equity Partners, a Rhode Island-based investment firm that specializes in the media and communications industries. This money, according to the New York Times, "will allow the companies to accelerate the introduction of their service and the transfer of NBC and Fox films and television shows into Internet-friendly video formats."
Oh, and did I mention that, since its March announcement, the yet unnamed company [...]

Michael Garrett

MySpace recently announced that it will be teaming up with the FOX television network and the Producers Guild of America to find television pilots. The “Storyteller Challenge,” beginning September 4, will be a contest in which MySpace will ask for 5-to 7-minute television pilots to be submitted and voted on by the other users of the site. Two winners will then be chosen and rewarded with a $25,000 prize, as well as the possibility of a development deal with [...]

CBS To Spread Video Clips Across The Web

Michael Garrett

CBS has apparently recently realized that in order to bring in more traffic and to increase views of its online video, it must become viral… in the sense that they must spread their video content across the web. That did, of course, play a big role in the massive growth of YouTube, which is currently the most popular destination for online video.
Quincy Smith, the president of CBS Interactive, has stated that "CBS is all about open, nonexclusive partnerships." He realizes that [...]

Is Twitter The Next Big Advertising Medium?

Michael Garrett

TV Networks apparently have their eyes on Twitter as a new marketing strategy. According to the Wall Street Journal, ABC, CBS, MTV and NBC have started to experiment with the year-old service as a way to communicate with potential viewers and consumers. This seems like a potentially lucrative idea, considering that users are able to receive messages via SMS, IM, email or the Twitter website.
MTV personalities used the service to keep Twitterers updated about the MTV Music Awards directly from the red [...]

ADiFY Gets $19 Million In Round B

Phil Butler

I caught a press release from ADiFY announcing that they received $19 million in series B funding. ADiFY is a leading provider of technology servicing vertical ad networks.
There seems to be no end in sight in the race to secure advertising models and platforms directed at Web 2.0. According to ADiFY, funding resources over the last year have been varied with Venture Partners, GE Commercial, NBC Universal and Time Warner leading the pack at boosting ADiFY towards their “Build Your Own Network”. [...]
