Final Conclusion - Vista Bites

Phil Butler,

I finally decided to jump on the Vista “hate” bandwagon, so here goes: “I freaking hate Vista!” I know I am not alone in the world because I hear everyone complaining about the same things I do. We complain about incompatibility, graphic intensiveness, complicated, too different and on and on. How could so many of us have been fooled into believing that the first of any operating system released by Microsoft would reveal anything but trouble? One would think [...]

LiveJournal - Russian Expression Tool?

Phil Butler,

LiveJournal has been around since 1999 as a “standby” of blogging and social networking. Yesterday Six Apart (which owns LJ) agreed to sell the company to SUP a Russian online media company. The complete terms of the deal are not available but SUP will evidently create an American management company to manage the social network's operations. Media company buyouts have been abundant in a sort of “feeding frenzy” for social media traffic and I think we can expect [...]

Wikipedia and the Fickle Finger of Fame

Phil Butler,

Wikipedia is one of our great fixtures of Web 2.0 and a collective community that most of us prize highly. The site contains perhaps the Web's most comprehensive, accessible and detailed storehouse of information, if somewhat questioned due to credibility issues. For my part, Wikipedia is fairly indispensable and as correct as any textbook I ever read. One of the coolest things about Wikipedia is actually getting one's own page there. On the Internet, it is pretty well established that [...]

Google Wants Your Soul - Next

Phil Butler,

If you were ever unsure whether or not Microsoft and Google are evil bastards, then you should absorb this little tidbit of news. A number of major research libraries just refused offers from both Google and Microsoft to scan their resources into computer databases. Out of the goodness of their hearts these two behemoths have been offering to scan these extensive and important resources for free - with stipulations that the material not be made available to other [...]

World Google Stats for Sex, Nazi, Gay, Viagra etc!

Phil Butler,

Apparently, we are all being observed under a series of magnifying glasses for various purposes. Have you ever wondered if other people search for the same things you do? Statistics from Google (who else) reveal some interesting facts about the world's search habits.
As it turns out - Egypt, India and Turkey are at the top of the list for the term sex for Google searches there. The stats are actually quite interesting and even disturbing.
What conclusions we draw from [...]

Nike Does Business 3.0

Phil Butler,

I have been on a trend towards reviewing “new age” user engagement by rather traditional companies this weekend. So, along those lines I thought our readers would like to see how making this transition should be done. Nike+ is a nitro powered company site that is approaching 32 million members in its online community. The Nike+ site and features illustrate how Web 2.0, traditional companies and user/customers can be subtly and effectively integrated.
As far as coolness goes Nike+ makes [...]

NY Times Goes Free With TimesSelect

Phil Butler,

Today the New York Times announced that its TimesSelect Web service will no longer be a paid subscription. This move signals further migration by traditional media into Web 2.0 form. Now most of the Web site will be freely available to readers in what appears to be a move to gain more readers.  The TimesSelect service will shut down on Wednesday after two years of paid subscriptions that brought world class content to subscribers. This is great news for me [...]

Are MySpace, Facebook and Digg Done?

Phil Butler,

The latest news from Silicon Valley is that key investors appear to be redirecting their focus. VC entrepreneurs have shoveled untold millions into startups that target primarily teenagers and younger demographics on social networks. Was this a well thought out investment strategy for the long term? I have said many times before that the “numbers” game of MySpace, Bebo, Digg and others is really reflective of migratory users within the same visitor matrix. Here is why I think MySpace, Facebook [...]

Craigslist - Is It “Pimpin” On Web 2.0?

Phil Butler,

News today confirms that users can get anything on the Web at Craigslist.org. Nassau County, NY police arrest 8 prostitutes in an ongoing sting operation targeting one of the Web's most visited sites. Craigslist's for-sale advertisement and employment sections have been increasingly used to trade sex for money according to law enforcement officials. Nassau County has made over 70 arrests since focusing on the popular Web domain last year and vice squads nationwide are tuned in as well.
Nassau County assistant chief of [...]

Microsoft Delivers Major Piece of Nothing; NYT Does It Up Front Page

Paul Glazowski,

Despite it’s somewhat muted announcement some months back, Microsoft’s imminent official unveiling of a Windows Live installer (alleged to arrive for public use and critique sometime this week) still manages to leave me wondering if folks in Redmond are as “on the ball” as some of them may appear to be (Ray Ozzie, for one).
It’s one thing for the largest software company in the world to deliver new services like Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger 8.5, Windows Live Photo [...]
