Of course the usual race of the two largest social networks in the world - Facebook and MySpace - is always a fascinating thing to watch. While Facebook is already bigger than MySpace worldwide, it still seems (or seemed - depending on the metrics you use) to be a little behind MySpace in one particularly important country - the US. |

When Google and T-Mobile first announced the first Google Android-powered phone, T-Mobile G1, back in September, T-Mobile promised we would see a huge promotional campaign for the innovative gadget. So it is quite understandable that the blogosphere was a little disappointed when we did not see T-Mobile G1 pushed at us everywhere and the launch date was much quieter than expected, especially compared to the launch date of iPhone with long lines of people waiting for Apple stores to open. |

There was an interesting discussion yesterday about the prospects of online advertising on All Things Digital by Peter Kafka. SearchEngineWatch has reporting on the results of quite an interesting survey about how the economic downturn is supposed to affect marketing budgets for various businesses. Quite understandably this is the question that bothers the entire internet industry now as we are trying to figure out if anything ad-supported (both blogs and startups) will be able to survive the recession or if we should start packing our possessions and moving to some other businesses. |

Back in July we reported on acquisition of a Russian contextual advertising company Begun (one of the largest companies working in the field in Russia) by Google. At the time we suggested that a combination of contextual advertising sold by Begun and Google AdSense could very well serve to monopolize the market of such ads in the Russian segment of the internet. |

Google has reported its Q3 revenues today and the industry seems to have exhaled in relief. Yesterday we heard lots of talks that if Google reported anything even remotely negative, the entire web industry would be significantly hurt as everyone would start questioning reliability of ad-supported business model. But fortunately for the industry, Google seems to be healthier than experts predicted. |

There is some piece of bad news in the online advertising revenue field today - and the news seems to be relevant both to traditional and new media outlets. The Newspaper Association of America has reported that online revenue generated by websites of newspapers has finally switched from continuous double-digit growth to devastating fall: financial results from the 2nd quarter ($777 million) are 2.4% lower than the results from the same period last year. |
