The Closest Knit Community Online

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I'm not talking about the tech blogosphere, who've shown a decided preference for infighting and attempting to eat their young. I'm talking about parents.
We exist in all forms online: in the tech blogosphere, in MMOs, on forums, and as mommy bloggers, but no matter what area we find ourselves spending most of our time in, we are a tightknit group of loosely connected people. Yes, if you make the mistake of mentioning something like circumcision or the decision to formula-feed, [...]

Web 2.0 Makes the World Small

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I had a regular old Profy topic for my article this weekend; a site review or a commentary on a news piece. It'll wait. This one is a little bit more personal.
A few months back, I wanted to interview my husband's best friend for a piece. He was running bulletin boards before I even know what a modem was, and was instrumental in helping to build what now makes up the various entities in the MyCoke community. I didn't [...]

Nike Does Business 3.0

Phil Butler

I have been on a trend towards reviewing “new age” user engagement by rather traditional companies this weekend. So, along those lines I thought our readers would like to see how making this transition should be done. Nike+ is a nitro powered company site that is approaching 32 million members in its online community. The Nike+ site and features illustrate how Web 2.0, traditional companies and user/customers can be subtly and effectively integrated.
As far as coolness goes Nike+ makes [...]

Intel Unveils Digg-like Clone. Why?

Paul Glazowski

The folks at Intel do a lot right for us tech-loving folk. They offer more powerful chipsets with ever increasing efficiency, allowing us to enjoy our Web apps and high-def Web video with greater speed and for longer stretches of time each and every year. It’s really a pretty great arrangement, if you ask me. Though they don’t get much time in the limelight, their work is certainly very much appreciated.
That said, they’re capable of mistakes. Their latest involves, surprisingly [...]

MySpace News Launch

Phil Butler

MySpace is apparently branching out to challenge Digg and Netscape in the News Arena. MySpace News will bring the news to its huge audience with essentially the same user recommendation capabilities as Digg and Netscape, but unlike these sites will scan thousands of web journals and news sites. The new service appears to be aimed at solving all the problems not solved by either Digg or Google and Yahoo! in the news realm.
MySpace, like Google, will allow publishers to [...]

Webjam - Funding a Worthy Startup

Phil Butler

European Internet start-up Webjam raises $2 million in first-round funding.
Webjam, a London startup founded by Yahoo! veterans, has just received their first round funding of about $2 million for further product development. We received the press release from Webjam Ltd. announcing this latest news about the versatile online community.
Webjam has been in Beta testing since its inception back in November of last year and has been covered by us then. This latest news prompted me to join the site to [...]

SoWeSay - What Will They Say About You?

Phil Butler

A new community was launched recently that allows users to rate and review anyone they know. SoWeSay is a networking tool approaching community from a different perspective and where users can obtain feedback through "SayWhat", a method for polling other users on topical issues.
According to a PRWeb press release, SoWeSay is a unique community for fostering honest, unsolicited feedback from the personal feedback and perceptions of other users. The site provides several ways of obtaining feedback and a way of sharing [...]

Swik and the Truth of Web 2.0

Phil Butler

Meet one of the faces of the real Web 2.0, open source community! Swik, the SourceLabs project has put on a new dinner jacket and is ready to tango.
I was surfing for news when I ran across an article on Techmambo about Swik. Ironically, a good friend IM'd my yesterday about Swik's latest project to offer users the ability to submit stories (ala Digg and Netscape) and to tag and vote on those stories. This is not another story about a startup, but [...]

No Hoooka’s in MySpace

Phil Butler

MySpace users are starting to feel the pain of the world's largest online community. I suppose this is only fair, it is their town after all!
MySpace has begun to limit the number and kinds of tools that users can embed in their pages. The giant community that sees over 90 million viewers a month wants to restrict users from having video players, advertising and other types of transaction tools. Evidently News Corporation, the owner or MaySpace, wants to ensure that [...]

UK Abuse Awareness Group Takes Bullying Campaign Online

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK has taken its anti-bullying campaign online to a virtual community: the popular teen and tween site Habbo. Their hope is that the campaign, which includes a three-month "stay" in the Habbo Hotel, will help them reach a new audience.
During the NSPCC's stay in the virtual community, they plan on holding online events and activities to promote their campaign, as well as driving more traffic to [...]
