Sell Flickr Photos on Getty? Say What?

Triston McIntyre

For whatever reason, when I read that a select few Flickr users will be able to license their photos through Getty, the Black Eyed Peas song "Where is the Love?" came to mind — not because I believe aspiring professional photographers who participate in the Flickr community have a particular affinity for the BEPs, but because the whole proposal has a sort of Willy Wonka's golden ticket air to it that rubs me the wrong way. Though [...]

Ubuket is the new darling of the music playlist creation set. Entering the ring with recent darlings MuxTape and Grooveshark, among others, Ubuket gives you a way to pull music from a variety of places online and on your computer and make playlists. You can even grab music from video sites like YouTube.
Ubuket is quite easy to use. Once you sign up you can grab tunes from a variety of places, including your computer, and turn them into playlists for [...]

Flickr Slated To Publicly Unveil New Maps And Places Features Today

Paul Glazowski

Last month we brought you word that Flickr would be launching “geotag”-centric upgrades.
One upgrade would be a new, more enhanced world map, enabling easier access to the world of photographs – now numbered at two-billion-plus – uploaded to the website’s servers. The photo service also claimed to be near the release of something called Flickr Places, which would enable one to limit searches to specific locations and see a variety of information deemed relevant to a particular [...]

Digg To Unveil New Images Feature In Coming Weeks

Paul Glazowski

It’s been a long-requested addition that has so far been absent Digg’s feature list. Fortunately, in a few weeks’ time, the wait will be no more.
The debut of an Images-specific category on Digg is to occur “in a week or two,” according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch. (How’s he know? K. Rose told him.) It was first promised by the San Francisco-based company back in August of this year, and after a good three months, it’s about ready for release.
Some [...]

Microsoft Rolls Out Live Search Update

Paul Glazowski

Starting today, Microsoft is “phasing in” a new version of Live Search, its online engine, in order for the company to better compete with two much more popular such venues on the Web, Yahoo! and Google. In a week, the new Live Search will replace the current version for all of Microsoft’s US-based users and will be accessible by all the world come the end of October.
What I can’t help but find most interesting about this announcement is Microsoft’s statement [...]

Phoja - Build Discussions Around Photos

Michael Garrett

Phoja is a new social community that is focused around photographs.
At first glance, it seemed like a Flickr-Digg mashup with its ranking system, but then I realized the differences, and the true potential that Phoja has.
This Melbourne-based startup was established in mid-2007 with an aim to encourage social discussion and community recommendations based on photographs.
The way I see it, there are 2 primary ways in which Phoja can be beneficial for users. Not including, of course, the benefits from [...]

Pulse - My Shiny New Object

Robert Sanzalone

Last month I was completely underwhelmed by Pownce. If you've been under a Social Networking rock over the last little while, Pownce is a Twitter-like service which updates your social network about what you're doing, new links, new videos, etc. The appeal of Pownce WASN'T the service itself - it was the invite process. Everyone wanted to get an invite, then dangle it over their friends who, in turn, did the same to their friends. While the viral effect on [...]

Apple’s .Mac Web Gallery: A Stellar Development

Paul Glazowski

Apple held an event at its campus earlier this week for particular members of the press, at which it showcased its new ultra-glossy lineup of iMac desktop computers, as well as a few updates to its iLife and iWork software suites. Tied into stageman Steve Jobs’ announcement and demonstration of two specific iLife applications – iPhoto ’08 and iMovie ’08 – was a new development pertaining to the company’s .Mac Net-based supplement for OS X users.
The addition to .Mac, strangely [...]

Box.net Creates Remote Storage Site For iPhone Users

Paul Glazowski

Are you one of the million or so iPhone owners out there? Are you consistently feeling a little short on storage? If so, Box.net has a snazzy solution that’ll work quite phenomenally through the device’s Safari Internet browser.
First, one very big particular that you might like to know about:
If you’ve ever used Box.net or know what the service is comprised of, you know that through traditional interaction with its website (via a PC or Mac loaded a full-fledged Web browser) [...]
