Today Cognition, creator of an already much-discussed natural language processing technology, is announcing release of its new semantic map which is the largest one ever created for English language. For you to imagine the size of the map, it includes more than 10 million semantic connections, over 4 million semantic contexts, more than 536,000 word senses, 75,000 concept classes, 7,500 nodes in the classification scheme, and 506,000 word stems: It took the scientific team in Cognition 23 years (and over 300 [...] |

I have just bumped into an interesting post on Powerset blog about a small survey they have carried out to see students’ attitude towards Wikipedia. Powerset is a semantic search engine recently acquired by Microsoft. The first product launched by Powerset is the tool to search Wikipedia to get more relevant results using the power of natural language processing technologies. |
Microsoft Found the Tool to Compete With Google – Semantic Search

It seems that everyone has already grown accustomed to the idea of search engines market completely dominated by Google. But at the Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo Satya Nadella, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Search, Portal and Advertising Platform Group, has made a statement showing that at least the software giant sees a possibility to change the situation. And the change is in the field of better user experience based on behavioral targeting and semantic search technologies. Currently the [...] |

I have received an invitation for our readers to attend private screening of the Dark Knight at the Matreon in San Francisco on July 17 (this Thursday) and the after party at the DNA Lounge (which is pretty good, this is where the VIP party for Web 2.0 Expo exhibitors and sponsors took place back in April so highly recommended). The previous day (Wednesday) MySpace and Techcrunch are hosting an exclusive screening in Los Angeles but for [...] |

We wrote about Evri earlier this week and how it falls short of the mark on being a valid semantic search tool. Now Microsoft is jumping into the quest for true semantic search by purchasing Powerset and lumping it under the Microsoft Live Search umbrella. |

Microsoft just announced that they will try to acquire Fast Search & Transfer, which is a Norwegian enterprise search solution. The deal is reportedly in excess of $1 billion and is dependent on FS&T shareholder approval. The big three in search, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have been locked in this search battle for some time with Google taking the lion's share of the users. |
Venture Capitalism - Indispensable

Venture Capital has played such a key role in the wildfire spread of Web 2.0 startups and innovations this last year. As writers we often report on funding for this company or that, but I think we seldom think of what this money goes for, how it is offered or what a big role it plays in the technologies we find so useful and fascinating. |
Interview With Powerset’s Barney Pell

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article about Powerset and their recent restructuring. Today, I talked with Barney Pell one of the founders and former CEO of the startup. As I have said before many times, Barney is an extraordinary person with a brilliant vision and Powerset has been one of my favorite topics of discussion. As far as my previous post, I had some concerns over the underlying causes for Steve Newcomb's absence and also Barney's shift [...] |
Powerset - Is It Man or Mouse?

I received my much anticipated invitation to Powerset's Powerlabs the other day, and was excited to finally get an inside peek one of the years most interesting startups. I have covered Powerset many times since my first article back in January. The brainchild of Barney Pell, Steve Newcomb and Lorenzo Thione held great potential in providing natural language search relevance for the Web. Powerlabs does indicate some significant developments toward natural search, but the larger issue to me is: "Where [...] |
