I was visiting the hakia blog today and found an interesting post by Melek Pulatkonak their COO. Recent privacy problems in the news and particularly Google's "issues" in this area have prompted much discussion. According to this blog article hakia has initiated a second "Search for Better Search" conversation with these critical and debated issues in mind. I covered the first version of these conversations back in May after a great talk with Melek who went to great lengths to [...] |

The New Ask.com: More Skin, More Features, And Simpler Still
by
on June 05, 2007

Ask.com. There’s a lot of love for the fourth-most-popular search engine on the Net. It’s an industry player that’s okay with not having to fight for the top spot. (Though it certainly would take it if the crown were offered.) It caters to loyalists and is content in knowing it offers more bang for the buck than just about any portal in existence today. Of course, it’d enhance it’s allure even further if I’d take Jeeves out of retirement to [...] |

Web 2.0-Friendly Engine Technorati Gets Revamp
by

Spring is the season of rebirth and revival, which many companies with homes on the Internet have taken to heart. One such website, which just a day or two ago reemerged onto the scene with a fresh coat of paint, is Technorati, a well kept index of blogs, videos, and music. And I must say, the new incarnation is far more attractive. |
Google Search Translation Service Tested

I have had rather vast experience as freelance translator so I am particularly interested in testing all translation-related Web tools. There are some good translation and language-learning communities online (and we have already mentioned some of them). But I have never seen any good example of machine translation. I have seen funny examples, ridiculous examples, even hilarious examples. But never in my life have I seen a good (or even so-so) example of machine translation. |

3GSM’s gathering in Barcelona this year had one of the greatest opening days of any conference to take place in the last month or so. Many of the main acts were coming out big with news of new products and services. It’s safe to say that there was no shortage of things to talk about. The city will continue to buzz for a few more days. |
GO2WEB20 Gets An Upgrade
by
on February 05, 2007

Simple ideas can be the foundation to some really great products. Such is the case with search. But search can only go so far, and no matter how precise the algorithm, if you don’t know what it is you’re looking for, you’re going to be in a rut until you discover what that something is. The founders of GO2WEB20 have proven this point well, by helping searchers search via directory. Better still, GO2WEB20 is all Web 2.0, all of the time. [...] |
Wikipedia Turns a Corner With Wikiseek
by
on January 17, 2007

Prior to this moment, a search on Wikipedia would best be done if one knew just what one was looking for, or, at the very least, close to it. With the launch of Wikiseek (beta), your method for finding stuff on the largest community-driven encyclopedia and general information source on the planet can be as specific or as vague as you decide to make it. It’s not Wikipedia for dummies, mind you. It’s just a great deal more powerful engine [...] |
