Google SearchWiki Does Not Influence Search Results but Already Manipulated

Svetlana Gladkova

Last week Google rolled out the SearchWiki functionality for its flagship product - Google Search. The functionality allows every registered Google user to customize the search results for every search query - and get exactly the same results next time this user performs a search for the same term. SearchWiki involves voting links appearing in the search results up and down, deleting them if you feel they are not relevant at all or adding new links that are not present [...]

Today Google is finally rolling out its long-promised and long-tested by a large group of randomly-selected users SearchWiki functionality - this time for everyone to see and use. The functionality allows any Google user to customize search results for any search query by moving results up or down according to their relevance (as viewed by this user), deleting certain links from results if deemed not relevant, adding sites that are not in the results pages and also adding notes for [...]

To Link or Not To Link? Is It Really Such a Big Question?

Svetlana Gladkova

The never-ending love of the blogosphere to the issue of linking to other blogs and failing to link when you really-really should is just plain amazing to me - we seem to never get tired of the entire meme and there is always some blogger or reporter who forgets to link back to the source where a link is due - and it starts all over again. Or a blogger does not link back intentionally - and it gets even [...]

Web 2.0 Expo is under way in New York this week for the first time in the conference history. There were lots of interesting ideas discussed during sessions yesterday with some of the sessions containing facts about social media that seem to be neglected or overlooked way too often. So I have decided to summarize a few of the most interesting surprises and revelations as I see them here.

“Black” Search Engine Optimizers Acquitted by a Russian Court

Svetlana Gladkova

Russian news outlets report today on a judgment of Saint Petersburg court in a lawsuit against SEO specialists that employed the so-called “black hat” techniques to ensure high ranking for their customers’ websites with search engines. The techniques involved using meta tags that are not supposed to actually represent the site promoted.
The lawsuit was filed after one electronics manufacturer found out that a search query for the trademark registered by this company brings users to the website of a competing [...]

Google Helps SEO Gurus Further – Launches “Insights for Search”

Svetlana Gladkova

Google has introduced an addition to both Google Trends and AdWords called "Insights for Search" that is intended to help you "see what the world is searching for" (in their own words). Using this tool everyone will be able to better understand what people search for on Google and see details for certain keywords across various geographic regions, verticals and time periods for more insight.
I have played with Insights for Search for about half an hour and [...]

What Is Going On At Mahalo?

Michael Garrett

Ever since the “human-powered search engine” Mahalo launched (and even in the months preceding launch), the startup has dealt with its share of skepticism from critics. Of course the founder, Jason Calacanis (formerly of Netscape/AOL and Weblogs Inc.), has dealt with his share of criticism before, but it seems as if progress on Mahalo is being closely monitored by the blogging community as if it is doomed to fail.
Just today, Allen Stern of Center Networks has posted about the [...]

Jiglu Introduces Auto-Tagging For Blogs

Michael Garrett

Tags have long been an integral feature of many web 2.0 services and, although some believe that tagging may be having a negative effect on the drive towards the semantic web, the use of tags has continued to spread. For example, Wordpress 2.3 (the latest version of the popular blogging platform) now includes tagging support by default, without any plugin.
But what about existing blogs that never had tags previously, but would like to add them. Going through each post [...]

Google’s SearchMash Enhanced With Flash And SnapShots

Michael Garrett

Anyone who is familiar with SearchMash knows that it is essentially Google's playground for new search technologies and features.
In a major update, Google has now introduced a fully Flash-driven version of the search engine that also makes use of the Snap Shots preview add-on so widely used around the web.
Flash has always had its naysayers who cite incompatibility, SEO-UNfriendliness, and slow load times, but Google seems to have created a very well-developed search engine that offers users much [...]

CBS To Spread Video Clips Across The Web

Michael Garrett

CBS has apparently recently realized that in order to bring in more traffic and to increase views of its online video, it must become viral… in the sense that they must spread their video content across the web. That did, of course, play a big role in the massive growth of YouTube, which is currently the most popular destination for online video.
Quincy Smith, the president of CBS Interactive, has stated that "CBS is all about open, nonexclusive partnerships." He realizes that [...]
