Yesterday Playboy came up with an interesting initiative to draw attention to the global financial crisis and help us look at the situation with at least some humor now that it’s obviously needed. The adult entertainment magazine has announced an idea for women of Wall Street special feature for the February 2009 issue to help at least 20 these women survive the crisis. Applications to pose are accepted from women from various Wall Street financial institutions - both still employed [...] |

Idea for a Profitable Startup: Toilet Occupancy Indicator

It is not all that often that I read something and get an idea for a startup that could really be useful but today I have just experienced this thing - when you see something and immediately understand this could evolve into a great startup that could never fail because of any recession since there are certain things people will never stop doing in any financial situation. This idea that I want to share today will be sure to work [...] |
Conferences Don’t Make Startups, Investors Do
by

When tracking last week’s coverage of DEMOfall and TechCrunch 50 conferences, in particular all the buzz surrounding Yammer winning at TC50 and how righteous this decision is, I could not help but wonder if it was actually worth all the efforts for the startups to launch at one of the big events. Right now it looks like the majority of startups have already realized that launching at such a big event is not the wisest decision of all with so [...] |
7 Useful Startups Launched This Week
by
on September 13, 2008

Early this week we have witnessed two major technology events with dozens of innovative ideas introduced. 72 startups and established companies introduced their new projects at DEMOfall and 52 more at TechCrunch 50. While we will be sure to continue arguing if winners are actually innovative enough to get their prizes, I thought it would be a good idea to present a short list of the startups that I personally feel like actually providing some real value - both for [...] |
So Is Twitter With a Business Model Innovative Enough?

I am still trying to get out some posts out with my impressions of the startups that we have seen launched early this week at TechCrunch 50 and DEMOfall. I have not attended any of the two events but that gave me certain freedom of tracking what was going on and reading everything other bloggers and journalists had to say. |
Advertising Startups at TechCrunch 50: Ignoring the Industry?
by
on September 09, 2008

Yesterday during one of the sections of TechCrunch 50 conference three startups were launched that all offer their solutions in the same niche - online advertising. Actually I’m afraid I miss one thing here: advertising is what the vast majority of web publishers use to earn revenue so it is kind of a foundation stone for the entire industry and still we only get to see 3 startups at TechCrunch 50 and I have not seen any at DEMOfall after [...] |
Web 2.0 Industry As a Perfect Example of Crowd Thinking
by
on August 30, 2008

Back in my university years when I studied philosophy I once wrote a paper on crowd thinking and behavior. That experience taught me that crowd is a very dangerous phenomenon because a crowd rarely can be reasonable and people can be easily manipulated to follow guidance from any leader clever enough to issue orders a crowd will understand. |
BackType – a New Model of Handling Blog Comments
by
on August 28, 2008
|
We have already seen enough competition (I think) between services intended to help blog readers easier authenticate themselves to leave a comment on a blog and have all the comments from blogs supporting this or that service aggregated into one account: Disqus, SezWho, JS-Kit, IntenseDebate all work in the same field with slight variations of approaches. But unfortunately as blog owners choose different services to install on their blogs, readers end up creating accounts with each of the services. |
WhozAround Offers a Simpler Way to Plan Events with Friends

Yesterday Susan Mernit and Lisa Williams from People’s Software presented their project named WhozAround? at TechStars Investor Day in Boulder. It is already possible to try out the Facebook application for WhozAround! (in alpha currently, beta promised to arrive soon) to see what this nice little tool is about. And since Susan has shared the information on the company’s blog already, I decided it would not harm them to give it a quick look here as well. |
Embargo Breakers: Who Exactly Do You Write For?
by

It seems that recently the problem with embargoes and breaking them has grown acute again. I for one have seen at least 3 embargoes broken this week only and I can imagine there are others where I am simply unaware of the embargo time. |
