Stumpedia Offers A True Human-Powered Search Experience

Michael Garrett

The field of "human-powered" search engines already seems to be too crowded with Mahalo, Wikia Search, Sproose, and ChaCha (which has now decided to focus on the mobile search frontier). All of these, however, still use bots, algorithms or a staff in one way or another in order to function as desired.
Stumpedia, on the other hand, claims to be "human-powered" and actually seems to be the only such engine to be completely at the will of its users. It's homepage [...]

Web 2.0 Didn’t Invent the Wheel

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Are you reading The Drama 2.0 Show? If not, you should be.
One of the hard parts of blogging about Web 2.0 is trying to maintain a balanced view of the latest and greatest in web technology as a whole. Note that I don't say each news item or review, because there will always be good and bad. The Drama 2.0 Show, which I assume most people interested in Web 2.0 are already reading, doesn't take that tack. Instead, it focuses [...]

Race 2008 - Search

Phil Butler

Microsoft just announced that they will try to acquire Fast Search & Transfer, which is a Norwegian enterprise search solution. The deal is reportedly in excess of $1 billion and is dependent on FS&T shareholder approval. The big three in search, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have been locked in this search battle for some time with Google taking the lion's share of the users.
As many have predicted, Microsoft was destined to make some move to close the gap between [...]

Wikia Launches Today: Wait, Isn’t This Mahalo with a Twist?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

Wikia Search , the new user-generated search engine from the Wikimedia Foundation, launched today to much fanfare. Still in alpha, Wikipedia founder and CEO Jimmy Wales admits that as an alpha release, it still lacks user data, leading to poor results, but he expects the search to improve over the coming weeks.
According to Wales, the future of Internet search depends on change according to Four Organizing Principles: transparency, community, quality, and privacy. And while he claims that Wikia [...]

Wikipedia and the Fickle Finger of Fame

Phil Butler

Wikipedia is one of our great fixtures of Web 2.0 and a collective community that most of us prize highly. The site contains perhaps the Web's most comprehensive, accessible and detailed storehouse of information, if somewhat questioned due to credibility issues. For my part, Wikipedia is fairly indispensable and as correct as any textbook I ever read. One of the coolest things about Wikipedia is actually getting one's own page there. On the Internet, it is pretty well established that [...]

Halopedia Celebrates Halo 3 on Wikia

Phil Butler

My great friends at Wikia forwarded me the news that Halopdedia is hosting a giveaway in honor of the massively anticipated release of Halo 3. Halopedia wants to reward all their loyal contributors with some cool Halo 3 gear. Halopedia just passed the 3,000 article mark on Wikia's gaming network which hosts some of the largest gaming communities anywhere. Halopedia is a valuable resource for all things Halo including game details, tips, tricks and more. The site is already loaded with [...]

Sports Wiki ArmchairGM Gets Major Updates

Michael Garrett

ArmchairGM is a sports site with a twist, as it uses a wiki interface (MediaWiki), to allow sports fans to run the show.
It has long offered features uncommon to wikis, including the ability for users to write sports opinion pieces in a blog post style and have them integrated within the rest of the site.
Late last year Wikia acquired the site, and it has now received some major upgrades that should help fans better communicate, share thoughts, and remain competitive.
All [...]

Why Wikia is Engaging Gamers

Phil Butler

Wikia is currently home to a great number of popular video gaming communities like Starcraft, Final Fantasy and Halo. Wikia Co-Founder Jimmy Wales demonstrated the new Wikia/Playxpert in-game toolbar at Wikimania Taipei last week. The toolbar allows users to search, read and contribute to Wikia's gaming community from inside the games. The new Wikia - PlayXpert toolbar also features iTunes, Facebook, Google widgets and other integrated features. Wikia has found another way to engage, retain and grow communities and content via simple collaboration.
Wikia [...]

Jimmy Wales Looking To Establish Open Source Search Engine

Paul Glazowski

We all love the concept of open source. It excites us. Despite the fact that the vast majority of computer users rely on creations born of a proprietary nature for most, or even all of their daily tasks, a big soft spot for Tux & Friends still exists. In an ideal world, everything would be “open”. I’m sure you’d agree.
There’ve been some great successes in the OS world. Linux, for one. It’s not the most popular platform out there today [...]

Swik and the Truth of Web 2.0

Phil Butler

Meet one of the faces of the real Web 2.0, open source community! Swik, the SourceLabs project has put on a new dinner jacket and is ready to tango.
I was surfing for news when I ran across an article on Techmambo about Swik. Ironically, a good friend IM'd my yesterday about Swik's latest project to offer users the ability to submit stories (ala Digg and Netscape) and to tag and vote on those stories. This is not another story about a startup, but [...]
