This post really should have a subtitle of “What should you be doing when it comes to customer service?” because it's one of the most crucial ways that a company can screw it up. Mistakes happen, and it's often overwhelming dealing with unhappy or unsatisfied customers. But meeting at least a bare minimum expectation can go a long way toward increasing a user base, and going the extra mile goes even farther. |

Socialthing Launches. And Crashes. And Launches.

I want to love Socialthing. Really, truly I do. I am not the world's biggest FriendFeed fan even though it seems everyone has already sworn allegiance to it judging by the number of times I see it added on my Facebook news feed. But FriendFeed is ugly. And I'm tired of having to find and add people everywhere I go. So imagine my glee when I opened my email this morning to find my Socialthing invite. |

SXSW begins this coming Friday, 7 March, and it will mark the first anniversary of Twitter's explosion on the scene. This past weekend, Twitter was down again, but this time, it was a planned outage to prep the servers for the predicted hammering of their system when SXSW convenes. Of course, you can always continue on Tweeting from the web or your IM client, but an entire cottage industry has sprung up around Twitter since SXSW '07, giving you tons [...] |

Virtual Assistants: The New Must-Have in 2008?

I know that there have been many days when I wish I was a Hollywood celebrity just so I could have my own personal assistant to run all my errands, keep track of my appointments, and fetch me coffees. When I spotted three different services and apps designed to do at least a bit of that work for me, I rejoiced, hoping that a trend is in the air this year that will bring me the ideal artificial assistant. |

Last month Leslie asked if 2008 would be the year of Open Source, and I commented that most successful Open Source applications ended up bankrolled and under the control of one of the major industry players. Sun just rolled one more Open Source app under it's gigantic umbrella, this time purchasing MySQL AB for 1 billion USD. It may be shaping up to be the year of acquiring Open Source. |
Utterz, Be Herd

“Utterz, be herd.” Personally, I find that phrase sounding like a bad pun that only a slow on the uptake city slicker could appreciate, and I mean bad. Would the program be any better? Utterz, in their own words, “is the first way you can instantly blog your experiences, thoughts and ideas, anywhere, using all the capabilities of your mobile phone. Utterz mashes together the voice, video, pictures, and text you call or send in and creates an 'Utter' that [...] |

Disqus is a new comment/discussion startup debuting today, and quite frankly it is very promising. This logical - enhanced online discussion tool allows blogs, websites and visitors to benefit from comments and relevant discussions in several ways. Disqus allows site owners to create custom discussion forums interfaced with a comments aspect for blogs and websites. The service can be utilized as a stand alone forum or as a companion to the comments tools. Disqus founder Daniel Ha told me that [...] |

Tags have long been an integral feature of many web 2.0 services and, although some believe that tagging may be having a negative effect on the drive towards the semantic web, the use of tags has continued to spread. For example, Wordpress 2.3 (the latest version of the popular blogging platform) now includes tagging support by default, without any plugin. |
How Did I Ever Live Without IMified?
by

This week I discovered the most useful IM integrated Web 2.0 application that I've seen, IMified. This sleek little application is actually an IM gateway to dozens of other applications that you already use. It allows you to send your self notes, tasks, calendar items, and much more, all from your IM client on your computer or phone. |
