YouTube Team Does Not Understand Social Media

Svetlana Gladkova

Yesterday the YouTube team published a blog post announcing their presence in two social networks where YouTube fans can connect to the their favorite video sharing site and its team - Facebook and Twitter. It looks like both places are pretty new for YouTube with Facebook page functioning since March and the first Twitter update posted by YouTube on August 26.
Basically creating presence in popular social networks is a very logical move for a successful online business and we have [...]

Google Sued for Patents Infringement… Again

Svetlana Gladkova

I actually hoped there was nothing to sue Google for any more because everyone who wanted to must have already filed their lawsuits but today’s news proves that I was wrong. Today GraphOn announced that the company had filed a lawsuit against Google in the Eastern District of Texas for patent infringement.
GraphOn claims that Google infringes 4 out of the company’s 23 patents. The patents in question cover GraphOn’s “unique method of maintaining an automated and network-accessible database” and are [...]

YouTube Housecleaning: What Happens When All the Faves Are Gone?

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

It's fairly obvious that YouTube is trying to clean up its act in light of the Viacom suit, clearing out any potential copyright issues. But when prominent YouTubers are impacted, does the seemingly overzealous housekeeping cause more damage than it helps?
Seesmic CEO and popular YouTube user Loic Lemeur found himself on the wrong end of a YouTube copyright issue lately. On July 18, Lemeur's YouTube account was suspended due to alleged copyright violations. The content in question? Interviews with [...]

Apple’s iPhone Apps Stunt Mobile Social Growth

Triston McIntyre

You have the most successful touchscreen handset on the market, your brand image could sell contacts to the blind, and guess what?  You are largely responsible for a roadblock in the advancement of mobile social networking.  What I'm referring to is the fact that new iPhone applications are not allowed to run continuously as a background processes.
Of course, I doubt Apple or its head man Steve Jobs directly intend to inhibit the advancement of mobile social media by [...]

Google Sold Us Out: The Viacom Decision

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira

I have read and re-read Judge Stanton's decision in the Google/Viacom suit more times than I really should have. At first, I was as outraged as everyone else, assuming that Judge Stanton was one more government figure without a clue how the Internet even works.
So I called my mother, who works in the courts, and ran it by her, and she pointed out two things to me: one, any Judge has a stable full of much younger and savvier law [...]

Fringers Taste the Fruits of Fring’s Open API

Triston McIntyre

If you've been lingering around Profy for a while, you might recall that I recently covered the mobile social platform Fring along with others like Xumii.  You might also recall that Fring opened its API to developers interested in designing mobile social applications.  Just a few weeks since that announcement, developers have already delivered two heavy-hitting applications to the Fring community.
That's right, merely weeks after announcing the release of its API to developers, Fring has landed applications for [...]

Jibe Joins the Fray of Mobile Social Aggregators

Triston McIntyre

For me, any day is a good day when another developer pops up with a new mobile social platform. Today is such a day, as Jibe is moving from the alpha to the closed beta testing phase.
There have been wealth of new mobile social platforms making appearances as of late. My favorite variety have been mobile social aggregators. This is largely because I have my paws in far too many social applications, and any platform [...]

Vzaar Allows Video Ads In eBay Auctions

Michael Garrett

Anyone who has sold items using eBay (or even Craigslist) knows how much more potential an item has to sell when a photo is provided. And 'actual' images are better than the 'stock' photos that some sellers download from the manufacturer's website. Prospective buyers don't just want to read a description, they want to see exactly what they would be spending their money on since some sellers can be very vague with their words.
For this reason, several services such as [...]

Should Flickr Stick To Photo-sharing?

Michael Garrett

Just yesterday Yahoo! announced that it would be adding video capabilities (which were added today) to its extremely popular photo-sharing site, Flickr. Now, just one day later there seems to already be a rapidly growing group among Flickr users, as reported on Webware, who are against the move and want the site to remain dedicated to photography.
Flickr, however, views videos as "moving snapshots people take now that digital cameras can record video as well as still images, " according to [...]

Google Applies Stat Tracking Power To YouTube

Leslie Poston

Google is well known for its comprehensive Google Analytics stat tracking program. It has now begun to apply its own stat tracking power to its new acquisition, YouTube. Today saw the launch of a stat tracking metric on YouTube videos.
The product, operating separately from Google Analytics, is called YouTube Insight. It is offering a limited, but helpful, view of who is viewing your videos and telling you a bit about your audience. It lacks the punch a full [...]
