Make Them Come Back: You Need a Usable Site and Fast Support Responses

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira,

I have a constant flow of apps in my inbox and in Firefox tabs, waiting to see if they are worth a review. Most of the time, when an app is unusable or has major bugs, I just delete it and move on. But I had two apps in a row last week that this happened with, and I realized it's a symptom of a larger problem with many Web 2.0 start-ups.
The two apps I tried using were SyncWizard and [...]

Paul Glazowski,

Happen to be a fan of free open source software? How ‘bout Open Office? Pretty useful suite of software, right? Indeed.
But what if you’re equally enthralled by things Web-based? You like what Zoho’s got. You may admire what Google has done thus far. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the best of both worlds? Open source software for use online?

Zoho Releases Updated Writer, Enabling Offline Document Editing

Paul Glazowski,

Zoho, a company responsible for the creation of one of the finest Web-based software suites in existence, today unveiled a much-anticipated update to its word processor.
While a previous iteration of the utility enabled the user the option to read documents while not connected to a broadband service, courtesy of Google’s Gears plug-in, Zoho’s new release of Writer allows for total offline access.
That means reading and editing is now possible with the new Zoho-plus-Google Gears combo. Which is something [...]

Adobe Reveals Planned Purchase Of Online Word Processor

Paul Glazowski,

Just when you think there couldn't possibly be any more news to be posted about Web-based word processors and things, at least for a short while, Adobe comes out with an announcement of its intentions to get into the game. Yes, that’s right, Adobe is joining the fray.
I honestly can’t imagine why Adobe would do such a thing. It is more than anything else a graphics-based company, with its hand firmly planted in the worlds of photography, video, [...]

IBM Delivers Free Office Suite, Not Web-Based; News Deemed Unfortunate

Paul Glazowski,

More IBM news today. Perhaps the company’s doing some much-needed catching up in the PR dept?
The company has announced the delivery of Lotus Symphony – free of charge. Should one applaud? Should one care?
I don’t know. There’s a good deal of truth to the free-equals-good argument. Free software is a wonderful thing. It gets a lot of people producing things and enjoying things already produced who usually wouldn’t be able (due to financial constraints). But there’s also truth to the [...]

Zoho Writer Enhanced With Google Gears

Paul Glazowski,

So, you like Google Gears, do you? You like firing up that browser, logging into a service/Web app (the current list of GG-compatible sites is short, but generally is a good group nonetheless), syncing up with the latest info – be it in the form of RSS feeds or to-do lists or whathaveyou - and enjoy the luxury of a small little button conveniently placed atop your browser window that, when pressed, allows you to continue reading and making edits [...]

Facebook Gets an Office Suite

Michael Garrett,

Facebook was originally designed around college students, and college students spend a lot of time studying and doing homework, correct? Perhaps that is the reason that Zoho, the masterminds behind online applications such as Writer (word processing), Sheet (spreadsheets) and Show (presentations), decided to make use of the new Facebook API to bring these very programs to the world of Facebook.
Zoho has an entire line of office productivity applications available at its home page, but Writer, Sheet and Show [...]
